Start with the current syllabus
IIT Madras says the GATE 2027 syllabi have been revised. Its test-paper and syllabus page lists all paper codes and links to their official syllabi. Download the file for the exact paper you selected and use it as the boundary of your preparation. Prior-year notes can help explain a topic, but they may omit a new item, retain a removed one or use an old section code. The current site specifically notes changes to XE, XH and XL sectional codes, so cross-check any code in older material before relying on it.
The 2027 catalogue has 30 papers across engineering, technology, science and related disciplines. It includes papers such as AE, AG, AR, CE, CH, CS, DA, EE, ME, PH, ST, XE, XH and XL, and introduces Robotics and Automation (RA). The list is an orientation; a candidate should open their paper’s syllabus PDF for the actual topics and subtopics. Do not assume that a familiar paper name means its 2027 syllabus is identical to the previous year.
Some papers have common and optional sections. In Engineering Sciences (XE), the syllabus page lists Engineering Mathematics as the common section and allows two optional sections. Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) has common reasoning and comprehension plus one optional discipline. Life Sciences (XL) has common Chemistry plus two optional sections. The 2027 codes and names should be checked on the current page because selected section labels changed from 2026. For a sectional paper, mark which part is compulsory, which choices are available and which sections you intend to answer before you build a study plan.
GATE 2027 pattern
The exam is a three-hour, English-language computer-based test with 65 questions and 100 marks. General Aptitude contributes 15 marks and the chosen paper contributes 85. The subject distribution varies. Many engineering papers include Engineering Mathematics in the subject marks; other papers use their own common and optional structure. Use the official question-paper pattern for the exact allocation attached to your paper code rather than applying one generic split to every subject.
Question formats are MCQ, MSQ and NAT. MCQs have a single correct option. MSQs may have multiple correct options. NAT questions require a numerical response through the computer-based interface. Questions carry one or two marks. A wrong MCQ costs one-third of a mark on a one-mark item or two-thirds on a two-mark item. Wrong MSQ and NAT responses do not incur negative marks, but MSQs have no partial credit. Candidates should learn to recognise the format before deciding whether to guess. The pattern page also describes abilities being tested, including recall, comprehension, application, analysis and synthesis.
Choose papers against actual programme rules
Candidates may take one paper or up to two, but only from IIT Madras’s published two-paper combinations. A second paper must be added to the original application. A related pair is not automatically allowed. Check the official 2027 combination list, then compare both codes with the programmes you may apply to. Institutes decide which GATE papers and qualifying degrees they accept. A paper choice that is academically interesting may still fail the entry conditions for a particular programme.
The common General Aptitude section appears across the papers, but the discipline-specific section differs. For preparation, transfer the official syllabus into a checklist and tag each line as secure, partly understood or not studied. Connect a gap to a textbook section or practice set. This is a planning tool, not an official topic-weightage forecast. A paper’s occurrence in previous questions does not establish how often it will appear in 2027; keep the entire published syllabus in view.
Turning the syllabus into a study plan
First, confirm the code on your application and download that code’s syllabus from the 2027 website. If you registered for two papers, use two separate checklists and confirm the pairing was authorised. Second, distinguish common from optional content for XE, XH and XL. Third, use a timed set from an official previous paper to identify gaps. Categorise each error as a missing concept, misread question, calculation mistake, weak time allocation or uncertain MCQ choice. Revisit the syllabus item behind each repeated error rather than restarting a generic chapter sequence.
The official downloads page links year-wise papers and answer keys from 2021 through 2026, along with a bulk archive from 2007 to 2026. It includes a sample paper for the new Energy Science section in XE. Recent papers can show the question style and interface expectations; older papers provide more practice where their content still matches the current syllabus. A past paper is evidence of that year’s questions, not a guarantee of 2027 topic distribution.
What to verify before exam day
Check the current paper code, syllabus version, two-paper combination and optional-section instructions. Use the current pattern for marks and penalties. Practise the computer-based interface and on-screen calculator through official mock resources. When the admit card is available, use it for your assigned session and test-centre instructions. The exam tests one selected paper, while post-exam institutes may use interviews or other selection stages. Preparing for GATE and preparing an admission application are related but separate tasks.
The 2027 paper and syllabus pages are maintained by IIT Madras. If a syllabus or code mapping is updated, use the latest official file. Questions about exam structure belong to the GATE helpdesk; questions about whether a code is accepted by a particular programme belong to that admitting institute.
