GATE 2027 cut-off status
GATE 2027 cut-off marks are not available yet. The examination is scheduled for February 2027 and the result announcement is scheduled for 19 March 2027, so the official 2027 qualifying thresholds have not been determined in the current cycle. Check IIT Madras’s notices after results are released. Do not use 2026 marks as a forecast or describe them as current 2027 cut-offs.
What a GATE qualifying cut-off means
A qualifying cut-off is the minimum paper-wise mark needed to qualify GATE under the applicable category. It is not the closing mark or rank for an M.Tech. seat. A candidate can qualify the examination and still miss an institute’s programme cut-off. Conversely, admission decisions may use a valid score in ways that differ from the exam’s qualifying threshold. The institute or counselling authority sets those conditions for the programme, category and year.
Do not treat all cut-offs as interchangeable. Check whether a number is a qualifying mark, an institute shortlist mark, a counselling closing rank, or a final offer threshold. Also keep the GATE paper, category and cycle attached. A CS General threshold of 30 marks in 2026 is not a CS admission cut-off at every institute, and it does not predict what a 2027 paper will require. The 2026 figures are shown here because they are the latest completed official GATE cycle at the time of this article.
Why thresholds differ by paper
The official 2026 page reports separate thresholds for each paper and category. The marks are set against the result for that paper; they are not chosen by comparing candidates across all GATE subjects. The paper-level numbers therefore should not be used to rank the intrinsic difficulty of subjects or to conclude that one qualification is an easier route to admission. A mark threshold does not account for an institute’s degree requirements, seat count, applicant choices or selection stages.
The category columns in the official table are General, OBC-NCL/EWS and SC/ST/PwD. Use the correct category shown for the cycle and the candidate’s documentation. Do not calculate a category’s value from another paper or round numbers unless the official table states it. For example, the 2026 CS marks are printed as 30, 27 and 20, while CE is 28.7, 25.8 and 19.1. Keep those reported precision levels intact.
How to use historical cut-offs
Historical thresholds are useful for understanding what “qualifying GATE” meant in that cycle and for checking the result notice. They are not a reliable standalone predictor of future marks. Paper content, candidate performance and the qualification process belong to each cycle. Use the 2027 syllabus and current pattern to prepare, then check the published 2027 result information after the examination.
For admission planning, use the programme’s own official page. Confirm the accepted GATE paper, qualifying degree, category, year, counselling route and round before comparing a past closing rank or score. Compare like with like and keep the year in the label. If an institute does not publish a past number, do not infer one from the GATE qualifying table. GATE qualification is one input to downstream decisions, not a universal guarantee of an offer.
