Who is eligible for GATE 2027
The GATE 2027 examination rule covers candidates currently studying in the third or a higher year of an undergraduate degree, as well as candidates who have completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities. The official eligibility page includes a programme table, so candidates should use the row for their actual qualification rather than relying on a shorthand degree name. Eligibility is defined for sitting the examination. It does not establish that every postgraduate course accepts the same degree or GATE paper.
The GATE 2027 FAQ confirms that students in the third year of B.A., B.Com. or B.Sc. programmes can appear. It also confirms the rule for third-year B.E. students who entered through a diploma route. There is no age limit and no limit on the number of attempts. A candidate still studying should confirm that the current year or semester of their programme satisfies the appropriate row in the official table. The exam’s eligibility rule does not remove a later institute’s requirement to verify a completed degree before admission.
Degree routes and qualifications needing extra care
The table covers conventional four-year B.E., B.Tech. and B.Pharm. degrees after Class 12, three-year engineering degrees after a B.Sc. or diploma, integrated master’s and dual-degree routes, three-year B.Sc., B.A. and B.Com. qualifications, integrated M.Sc. and five-year B.S.-M.S. programmes, and four-year agriculture, horticulture and forestry degrees. The minimum year depends on the structure of the degree. For example, the listed three-year bachelor’s route starts in the third year; integrated programmes have their own year thresholds. Candidates in a non-standard programme should check the qualification and year descriptions in the current table carefully.
The official note allows candidates pursuing a higher degree or already holding a degree higher than the listed qualification to appear. This does not mean that a higher qualification makes every paper suitable or guarantees admission. Candidates should choose a paper based on its syllabus and the requirements of their target programmes. GATE does not provide a personalised paper recommendation.
Professional-society qualifications require a recognition check. The eligibility page names bodies such as the Institution of Engineers (India), Institution of Civil Engineers, IETE, Aeronautical Society of India, Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, Indian Institute of Metals and Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers. A candidate relying on such a credential must verify that the relevant examination has been approved as equivalent to the degree named in the official rules by the authorities listed there. Membership alone should not be treated as equivalent to an approved qualifying examination.
Candidates whose qualifying degree is from outside India must be in the third or a higher year, or have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years in the listed disciplines. Overseas eligibility does not create an overseas test centre: the GATE 2027 FAQ says all examination centres are in India. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens residing abroad must select an Indian city and make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
Exam eligibility and institute admission rules
A person who meets GATE eligibility may still fail a programme’s entry requirements. Admitting institutes set their own accepted degrees and papers, minimum marks or CGPA, subject prerequisites, category rules and selection stages. They may use interviews, written assessments, career records or other criteria in addition to the GATE score. The official FAQ states that admission is subject to each institute’s own rules. Before choosing a paper, list actual programmes and verify their accepted GATE code and qualifying degree against the current admission notice.
This distinction matters for three-year B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. graduates. GATE 2027 may allow them to sit an exam, while a particular M.Tech. programme may require a different qualifying degree. Another interdisciplinary programme may accept a wider set of backgrounds. The examination committee’s eligibility decision does not answer that programme-level question. Check the institute portal or prospectus for the year you intend to enter, because degree mappings can differ by programme and cycle.
The same separation applies to scholarships and jobs. A qualifying score can be used for eligible programme applications and some employers use GATE scores, but GATE itself does not guarantee admission, financial assistance or employment. Each destination decides who meets its rules. Keep the questions separate: may I sit the exam, does my target course accept my degree and paper, and have I met its remaining selection conditions?
Documents and identity details
The GATE 2027 registration process uses DigiLocker for Indian nationals. The official instructions say that personal data such as name, date of birth, contact details and identity information are fetched from the account after the candidate provides consent. A verified DigiLocker account is recommended. Candidates using an unverified account can select the available alternative ID route, but their applications are scrutinised and original identification is checked at the test centre. Applicants should retain access to the same account because official notices say subsequent communications are tied to it.
The application name should match the identity document the candidate will present. GATE’s FAQ says academic marksheets are not required in DigiLocker for the examination process. That does not waive later degree verification by an admitting institute. PwD applicants should follow the current brochure and GOAPS document list for certificate and accommodation requirements. Use the exact current-year file names and upload instructions; do not assume a previous cycle’s requirements remain unchanged.
Before relying on your status
If your degree is integrated, professional, overseas or described by a non-standard title, read the detailed eligibility table and FAQ together. If you are still studying, confirm the year-of-study threshold. Keep evidence of enrolment for later institute applications. Then verify the paper and degree mapping at every programme you plan to apply for. For unclear examination eligibility, contact the GATE helpdesk; for programme eligibility, contact the admitting institute. Neither answer should be inferred from the other.
