Outlook-ICARE 2027: use the correct comparison group
In Outlook-ICARE’s 2027 ranking of private business schools in Bengaluru, IIBS is ranked third among 19 institutions, with an overall score of 75.33. In Outlook’s national list of the top 200 private B-schools, IIBS is ranked 23rd with the same score. These are different comparison sets: the first is a Bengaluru-only regional list, while the second compares private schools across India. A rank number is meaningful only alongside that category and year.
The Bengaluru table gives useful context around the position. Jagdish Sheth School of Management is first with 87.63, XIME Bengaluru is second with 79.97, IIBS is third at 75.33 and Indus Business Academy is fourth at 75.10. The score gap between IIBS and the next listed school is 0.23 points, calculated by subtracting 75.10 from 75.33. This is a small difference within one publisher’s scoring system, not evidence that the programmes are interchangeable or that a student’s outcome will differ by the same amount.
What sits behind the overall score
Outlook’s table assigns weightings of 25% to faculty-student ratio, 20% to research, 25% to employability, 20% to faculty quality and 10% to inclusiveness and diversity. The IIBS row lists dimension scores of 98.1, 42.71, 84.76, 85.54 and 39.65 respectively, with an overall score of 75.33. On the displayed dimensions, research and inclusiveness/diversity are the lowest values, while faculty-student ratio and faculty quality are higher. This is a description of the publisher’s table, not an independent assessment of classroom experience, placement probability or an individual programme.
A quick map of the three Outlook references
These positions do not conflict. The first two are ranked tables with different geographic scopes; the third is a separate list that Outlook sorts alphabetically. The shared 75.33 score in the regional and national private tables is the same overall score shown in the publisher’s row, not two independent student-outcome measures.
Outlook’s rubric weights employability and faculty-student ratio at 25% each, research and faculty quality at 20% each, and inclusiveness and diversity at 10%. This means 75.33 is a weighted index score, not 75.33% of students placed, a probability of admission or a direct return-on-fees measure. The IIBS row’s lower displayed research and inclusion scores are useful prompts for questions about the publisher’s category data; the table does not explain the reasons for those values, so applicants should not infer a cause from the scores alone.
The 2027 tables rank business-school entries, not separate PGDM Prime and NextGen pathways. Use them as an institutional comparison and then examine programme-level course, fee and placement evidence separately. A city-specific rank can help compare local options, while a national private-school rank broadens the peer group; neither answers whether a particular specialisation fits your goals.
The category weights help explain why an overall score should not be read as a single measure such as salary, academic quality or return on fees. Applicants who care most about employability should inspect that dimension and the underlying evidence available from the publisher, then compare it with the programme’s own current placement report. Applicants focused on faculty, inclusion or research should make the same category-specific comparison rather than relying on the headline rank alone.
“Gold Standard” list position is not a rank
IIBS’s admissions page has described the institute as “Ranked 9th” in an Outlook Gold Standard ranking. Outlook’s own 2027 Gold Standard article says 20 schools made the list and labels the institution column “In Alphabetical Order.” IIBS appears as item 9 in that alphabetical sequence. The publisher does not present that item number as a ninth-place rank, so it should not be compared with the numbered third-place Bengaluru ranking or 23rd-place national private ranking.
This distinction matters when reading rankings reused in college marketing. A list entry, a city rank, a national private-school rank and a ranking within a particular subject are separate results. Check the publisher’s table heading, year and comparison group before interpreting a number. The 2027 Outlook regional and national tables are the direct ranking sources for the positions quoted here.
NIRF: do not turn a data submission into a rank
IIBS’s NIRF page links Management, Overall and Innovation categories and lists year links including 2025. The linked NIRF Management 2025 PDF is labelled submitted institute data and identifies the institution as International Institute of Business Studies, institute code IR-M-C-21020. A submitted form is not itself a final NIRF rank. We could not verify an exact IIBS position from the Ministry’s NIRF 2025 Management ranking table during this check, so no NIRF rank is quoted here.
For a current comparison, use the Outlook-ICARE Bengaluru table for IIBS’s regional position and the national private-school table for its national private category. Check the list title, year, rank heading and score weights each time. Do not treat alphabetical placement in the Gold Standard list or IIBS’s submitted NIRF data as an additional numerical rank.
