Separate permission to sit the test from admission eligibility
PTE Academic is an English proficiency test. Its score can help document language ability, but it does not establish that you meet a university’s academic entry rules. A degree programme may separately require particular school subjects, grades, a completed qualification, entrance examinations, work experience or documents. The institution sets those conditions. A candidate can be eligible to book PTE and still be ineligible for a course; meeting a course’s English condition also does not guarantee admission.
The source packet reviewed for this guide did not confirm a current universal minimum age or an under-18 consent rule. Pearson material from July 2025 mentioned an age framing, but it is not a current test-taker policy and should not be used as a definitive rule. If the candidate is under 18, check Pearson’s current terms or ask its support team before booking. Do not rely on a coaching page or old test guide for consent requirements.
Check your identification before paying
Pearson’s identification policy is a critical test-day condition. The name, date of birth, citizenship and gender entered at booking must match the identification document presented. The current policy generally requires valid original identification, commonly a passport, but permissible documents and exceptions depend on the country and test. Rules can also differ for candidates without a passport or with a special circumstance. Read the current policy for the country where you will test and resolve any exception with Pearson before selecting an appointment.
Use the same spelling and order of names shown on the accepted ID when you create or update the myPTE account. Check the date of birth and other requested details carefully. If you discover a discrepancy after booking, contact Pearson through its official support route immediately; do not assume the centre can change the record on test day. Keep the support response and booking confirmation.
Choose the variant required for your purpose
For university study, first check whether the course names PTE Academic and which delivery mode it accepts. PTE Academic UKVI has the same content, format and scoring but includes a Secure English Language Test Unique Reference Number for specified UK visa routes. Whether you need that version depends on the visa route and the institution’s requirements. A university language condition does not automatically satisfy a separate immigration condition.
PTE Core is a distinct general-English assessment used for certain Canadian permanent-residence and citizenship purposes. PTE Home A1, A2 and B1 are two-skill Speaking and Listening tests for specified UK family or settlement routes. These tests do not become substitutes for Academic just because they share the Pearson brand. Confirm the exact test name with the organization that will receive your result before booking.
Confirm the academic requirement directly
Institutions set their own language thresholds. One course may ask for an overall score plus minimums in each communicative skill; another may accept a different test, variant or score age. The overall PTE scale is 10–90, but there is no universal admissions pass score. Use the exact current programme and intake page, and ask the admissions office if the accepted test or minimum is unclear. Pearson’s destination search can help find institutions to investigate, but it does not prove that a particular course, campus or intake accepts the result.
For each application, check these items together: the test variant and mode, overall threshold, component floors, score recency, deadline for the official score, and method for sharing it. Do not compare only the institution name or a general acceptance logo. Policies can be programme-specific and can change between intakes.
A quick self-check before registration
Before payment, confirm that you have an acceptable ID for the test country; the identity details in your account match it; the correct Academic or UKVI variant has been selected; and the institution or authority accepts that exact result. If you are under 18, or if your identity document is unusual or recently changed, verify the current policy with Pearson first. Separately confirm your course’s academic eligibility and application deadline with the institution. These checks address different gates and neither replaces the other.
Use Pearson’s live booking flow for appointment availability and current country-specific price. Read the latest identification policy again before test day because document rules and local exceptions can change. Keep written confirmations where Pearson or the institution answers a specific eligibility question.
If your document or personal details need an exception
Candidates sometimes have a name that appears differently across documents, a recently renewed passport, dual citizenship, or no standard passport for the test country. Do not guess which version Pearson will accept. The current identification policy sets the baseline and describes local exceptions; contact Pearson support with the test country and document type before booking. Ask what original document to bring and whether the account must be corrected first. Save the answer and check that it applies to the appointment you selected. A centre employee may not be able to override the identity record after a mismatch is discovered.
If you already booked with a spelling or date error, use the official myPTE support path as soon as possible. Do not create a second profile to work around an error unless Pearson instructs you to do so. Duplicate accounts can complicate a booking and score report. Confirm the final candidate record and appointment before travelling. If Pearson requires a rebooking, check its change policy and the new slot before cancelling a valid appointment.
If you need English evidence for more than one purpose
Some applicants are applying to a degree and also preparing a visa application. Treat the two requirements as separate checks. The college may accept Academic for admission while a visa route names a SELT test. PTE Academic UKVI includes the relevant Unique Reference Number for certain routes, but the existence of a UKVI variant does not mean every student needs it. Check the route’s current government instructions and the university’s own policy. If either is unclear, ask the responsible office to identify the exact test name.
Likewise, a score accepted by one institution does not establish eligibility with another. Make one row per programme and intake in your own planning notes. Include accepted variant, delivery mode, overall score, skill floors, result age and official reporting method. This is especially useful when applying across countries or degree levels, where the receiving organization may use a different evidence rule. Do not assume a single English test will satisfy every institution simply because its name appears in a directory.
Questions to resolve before you pay
Ask Pearson whether the document you plan to present is acceptable in your testing country, whether your age requires consent, and how an account detail can be corrected. Ask the university whether it accepts your test variant and mode for the specified course and intake, whether every skill has a minimum, and when it must receive the result. Ask the relevant visa authority or adviser whether a separate SELT condition applies. These questions go to different organizations because no one source controls all three decisions.
Keep the answers with the booking and application records. If policy language changes, use the current official page and confirmation date. A dated written response is more useful than a generic forum answer because it captures the document, programme or route you actually asked about. If a requirement remains ambiguous, delay payment until the receiving authority clarifies it; choosing the wrong test can leave you with a valid score that does not meet the intended rule.
