There is no single CUET UG cutoff that determines admission to every participating university. NTA conducts the examination and publishes scores; universities handle admissions for their own programmes and prepare merit lists using CUET scores alongside their other criteria. A cutoff is meaningful only when its institution, programme, campus, academic year, category, round and score measure are clear. The 2026 NTA bulletin states that NTA does not prepare the university merit list and directs candidates to the institution for admission procedures. CUET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin
What people mean by “cutoff”
The word can describe different thresholds: minimum marks to qualify for a process, a university's eligibility minimum, the score needed to be considered for a programme, a published shortlisting threshold, or the score of the last candidate offered a seat in a particular allocation round. These measures are not interchangeable. A qualifying condition may let an applicant proceed without indicating the likelihood of a seat. A last-round closing score reflects the applicant pool, seats, choices and rules for that specific year and round.
For CUET admissions, universities may use programme-specific subject combinations and other stated conditions. NTA's 2026 bulletin says each participating university handles its admissions and declares its own counselling or admission schedule and merit list using CUET scores and other university criteria. It also states that NTA does not prepare that merit list. Therefore an NTA score alone does not supply a universal admission cutoff. NTA information bulletin, admission provisions
How to read a published number
Before comparing a cutoff, record the university and campus, exact course, admission session, category or quota, round, score or rank measure, and whether the figure is a minimum, shortlist threshold or last admitted score. Confirm whether it uses one paper, a subject combination, a normalized NTA score, a percentile or another institution-defined calculation. If any of these labels is missing, the figure may not support a like-for-like comparison.
Use the official university admission portal or prospectus as the responsible source. A coaching infographic or an aggregator can help you find a document, but should not replace the university's own notice for its course and category. Check the publication date and whether the table represents provisional allocation, final admission, a special round or another stage. If an institution later revises a list, the later official notice controls.
Do not compare a general-unreserved score with a reserved-category threshold, one campus with another, or one programme's combination with a different course. A figure reported in raw marks may not be directly comparable to an NTA score or percentile. Even within the same course, changes in subject mapping, eligibility, applicant preferences, seat availability and round rules can affect what the reported number means.
Historical cutoffs are context, not a target
Previous-year closing scores can help you understand the range of outcomes in a defined course and round, but they do not guarantee a result in the next session. Treat them as historical evidence only when the scope is sufficiently detailed and the underlying official list can be checked. A single “expected cutoff” without programme, category, round and method is not a reliable prediction.
This overview does not publish a universal numeric cutoff because the reviewed NTA material does not define one and because institutional outcomes require course-level and round-level evidence. It would be misleading to combine unrelated university thresholds into one national target. For an individual course, use its own published lists and keep each cycle and category separate.
A practical way to assess your score
First check whether you meet the programme's minimum academic and subject eligibility. Next, verify which CUET papers and score components the university uses. Then compare your score with official prior-year results for the same programme, campus, category and allocation round, if the institution publishes them. Finally, follow the current year's merit list, choice-filling and allocation notices; these are the live decision process.
If an official list reports multiple rounds, compare like with like. The first list may reflect a different choice pool from a later or special round. Note whether the number is an opening or closing score, whether it refers to candidates offered a seat or candidates who completed admission, and whether there are separate lists by category or quota. Do not treat a vacancy list or special-round result as a normal-cycle forecast.
For planning choices, build a balanced preference list using the university's current rules and your genuine preferences. A score near a historical threshold is not a promise of selection or rejection. Seat movement, applicant choices and applicable eligibility can change outcomes. Keep backup programmes that you would actually accept, and observe each institution's deadlines even while waiting for another result.
Where cutoffs fit in the admission process
The CUET result is one input into programme admissions. NTA's bulletin says participating universities declare their counselling or admission schedule and merit list after NTA declares the result, based on the CUET score and each institution's other criteria. It advises candidates to refer to the applied university for admission procedures. This makes the university portal essential after the exam: a candidate can have a valid score and still need to register, enter preferences, upload documents, pay a fee or report within a separate window.
Do not confuse examination eligibility with a cutoff. Eligibility determines whether the candidate satisfies the published conditions to be considered. Selection depends on the university's stated merit method and the current applicant and seat process. Likewise, an NTA score is not the same as a final seat allotment. Follow the institution's notifications and verify any offer, waitlist or cutoff in the official source.
What to check for 2027-28
The official sources reviewed for this page describe 2026 admissions and do not establish CUET UG 2027-28 cutoffs. Future programme thresholds cannot be known before the relevant institutions publish their process and results. When the next cycle begins, check each course's updated eligibility, subject combination and selection method. Once lists are released, record the cycle, category, round and score basis before using a figure for planning.
