For CUET (UG) 2026, NTA allowed candidates who had passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination, and candidates appearing in 2026, to sit the test. The NTA bulletin prescribed no age limit for appearing. Those are examination-level rules for one cycle; they do not make every candidate eligible for every undergraduate course. A university can set programme-specific age, subject, marks, year-of-passing, category, reservation and document conditions. Check both the NTA bulletin and the current admission notice for every programme you are considering. CUET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin
Two eligibility questions, two decision-makers
First ask whether you may appear for the CUET cycle. The NTA bulletin sets the examination-level rules and lists qualifying examinations. Then ask whether you meet the admission requirements for a particular programme at a particular university. The university's prospectus or admission bulletin answers that question. Passing the first check does not automatically satisfy the second.
NTA's 2026 bulletin says there is no age limit for appearing, while requiring candidates to fulfil any age criteria of the university, institution or organisation where they seek admission. It also states that university policies apply to such matters as quota, category, relaxation, reservation, qualification, subject combinations and preferences. Merely appearing in CUET does not confer a right to admission. Selection depends on the institution's admission criteria and verification. So a broad CUET eligibility summary is only a starting point, not a course-level decision.
Examination-level eligibility in the 2026 bulletin
The 2026 bulletin allowed candidates who had passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination, or were appearing in 2026, to take CUET UG 2026. Its qualifying-examination list includes the final examination of the 10+2 system conducted by a recognised Central or State Board and Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examinations, among other listed routes. Read the complete list to check the credential you hold rather than assuming that every school-leaving qualification is automatically equivalent.
For a Class 12 or equivalent qualification completed outside India or through a board not specified in the bulletin, NTA's 2026 instructions call for a certificate from the University Grants Commission confirming that the examination passed is equivalent to Class 12. Where the Class 12 examination was not a public examination, the bulletin says the candidate must have previously passed at least one public Board or Pre-University examination. These specific provisions may matter more than the general “passed or appearing” summary.
The bulletin also says that relevant university or institution conditions apply to the year in which a candidate appears for the qualifying examination, and advises applicants to confirm eligibility with the respective institution. A candidate who passed Class 12 in an earlier year should therefore check whether the target course restricts the year of passing. Do not assume that permission to sit the NTA test resolves a university's admission conditions.
Course-specific subjects and marks
Before selecting CUET papers, inspect the subject and eligibility rules for every intended course. A university may require particular Class 12 subjects, a minimum qualifying aggregate, or a prescribed combination of CUET language, domain and aptitude scores. Your school subjects and chosen CUET papers are distinct details; depending on the programme, both can be relevant. Different courses at the same institution may require different subject sets.
Do not apply a percentage threshold repeated in general guides to all universities. The NTA bulletin does not establish one universal Class 12 minimum for every participating programme. Where minimum marks, subject prerequisites, equivalence or relaxation are listed, record the precise programme, category and evidence required. If the notice is silent or ambiguous about your subject combination, contact the institution's admissions office through its official channel before the deadline. Keep the written response.
Make one checklist row for each course and campus: required school subjects; minimum marks, if any; accepted CUET papers; restrictions on year of passing; age, category, domicile or other conditions; and documents needed to prove each claim. Add the official prospectus page beside every rule. Keep separate rows when requirements differ instead of turning them into a university-wide rule.
Appearing candidates and pending results
The NTA rule allowed students appearing in Class 12 or equivalent in 2026 to sit CUET UG 2026. That permission concerns appearing for the examination; it does not guarantee that an applicant with a pending result can complete admission. The university may require the final result or marksheet by a stated date and may set its own verification process. Read the programme notice for when the result must be available, whether provisional consideration is possible, and what happens if the candidate does not meet the final condition.
If you are waiting for board results, plan for both processes. Complete NTA requirements under the examination bulletin and monitor the institution's instructions for submitting final marks and documents. Do not enter predicted marks as final marks unless the form explicitly asks for them. Keep the board's official result document and any required school certificate ready for the university stage.
Category, reservation and supporting documents
Examination registration, reservation claims and university admission verification are connected but distinct. The NTA bulletin refers candidates to each university's applicable category, reservation, relaxation and quota policies. An institution may specify the accepted certificate, issuing authority, format, validity date and verification stage. Confirm those details in the current course notice; an entry in the NTA application does not itself establish a university reservation claim.
Use a category or reservation status that you can substantiate with the documents required by the institution. Check spelling, names, dates and certificate validity early, especially where a designated authority must issue the certificate. A mismatch may need correction before an admission deadline. If a course uses domicile or a special quota, check the institution's precise definition and evidence. Do not infer domicile eligibility only from where you currently live or studied.
Disability-related examination accommodations and admission-stage provisions also have separate rules. Follow the current NTA bulletin and notices for the test, and the university's rules for admission, reservation or accommodations. Exam-day assistance does not decide course eligibility, and a university admission category does not replace NTA examination procedures.
A five-step eligibility check
- Confirm the cycle and course. Open the NTA bulletin for the intended test year and the institution's admission notice for the intended academic session.
- Match your qualification. Check your Class 12 board or equivalent against NTA's qualifying routes. Follow the stated equivalence requirement for overseas or unlisted qualifications.
- Read course conditions. Verify school subjects, marks, age, year-of-passing and other programme-specific rules.
- Match the CUET papers. Choose test subjects that satisfy the programme's stated combination and the limits in the current NTA bulletin.
- Prepare proof and dates. List marksheets, certificates and category or domicile records, with the NTA and university deadlines for each.
If a condition remains unresolved, do not assume a lenient interpretation based on another institution's policy. Ask the admissions office responsible for that course, state your qualification and subject combination, and retain its response.
What changes for the next cycle
This page reports CUET UG 2026 rules as a dated baseline. The official sources reviewed do not establish 2027-28 eligibility requirements. NTA or universities may revise examination criteria, programme prerequisites, reservation policies or document instructions. When the next bulletin and prospectuses appear, repeat the check using those editions before choosing papers or relying on a prior-year condition.
