Start with the paper combination, not a generic NIFT timetable
NIFTEE preparation is programme-specific. Before choosing books or a coaching plan, mark the papers and stages for your application in the official 2027 bulletin. BDes combines GAT Section A and CAT, followed by Situation Test for shortlisted candidates. BFTech uses GAT Sections A and B. MDes includes GAT A and CAT, then interview; MFM uses GAT A+B and interview; MFTech has a GAT with some engineering-field questions followed by interview. The weights differ: for example, BDes assigns 50% to CAT and 20% to Situation Test, while BFTech’s final weight is split 30%/70% between GAT A and B. Your weekly plan should reflect the actual components that count for your course.
Use the NIFTEE 2027 bulletin as the syllabus baseline. It describes broad topics and abilities, not a promise that every year repeats the same question mix. The older 2026 detailed counts are not a verified 2027 blueprint. Check NIFT’s current Admissions page for any new guideline or amendment before the exam.
Make GAT practice measurable
For Quantitative Ability, practise the bulletin’s arithmetic areas: fractions, decimals, percentages, rate and work, ratios, proportions and distance problems, alongside basic operations. First build accuracy with untimed sets, then repeat similar questions under a fixed limit. Keep an error log with three columns: concept not known, calculation mistake, or question misread. That classification tells you whether to revise a topic, slow down at a particular step or practise more timed reading. Do not spend all your practice time on advanced mathematics when the official outline emphasizes practical quantitative ability.
For Communication Ability and English Comprehension, use short passages and vocabulary in context. The listed examples include synonyms, antonyms, equivalent words, singular/plural forms, one-word substitutions, idioms, spelling and comprehension. Review why an option is right and why close alternatives do not fit the sentence. Build a small list of recurring mistakes rather than trying to memorize an oversized vocabulary book without context.
For Analytical and Logical Ability, practise drawing conclusions from stated conditions. After each question, write the fact that supports your answer and note any assumption you almost introduced. For General Knowledge and Current Affairs, use one reliable dated news source and review it consistently; the bulletin does not provide a closed list of events or a fixed future question count. Revise major developments and basic institutional awareness, but do not confuse coaching predictions with the official scope.
The objective GAT marking scheme in the 2027 bulletin is +1 for correct, −0.25 for incorrect and zero for unanswered. In practice tests, record accuracy and attempts separately. If a wrong answer came from a careless guess, test whether better elimination or leaving it blank improves your expected score. This rule concerns objective questions; it is not a formula for evaluating CAT.
Build CAT skill through repeated briefs
CAT asks for observation, concept development, design ability and creative use of colour and illustration. Practise with a defined brief, a timer and a deliberate review. Before drawing, identify the audience, purpose and constraints. Generate a few possible concepts, choose one that communicates clearly, and use composition to lead the viewer through the idea. Check proportion, contrast, clarity and whether your image answers the prompt rather than merely looking decorative.
Keep an observation sketchbook for people, objects, surfaces and spaces. Draw from what you see instead of relying only on symbols from memory. Redo an exercise after reviewing it: choose one improvement, such as clearer hierarchy or more purposeful colour, and apply it. If you are preparing for MDes, practise explaining the design decision behind a concept because the programme also has an interview. Do not train only for a conventional multiple-choice test; CAT is pen-and-paper and creative.
Practise the later stage that applies to you
For BDes Situation Test, practise converting a short situation into a workable model using a limited material set. Start by identifying the core message, then allocate time for structure, construction and finish. NIFT assesses space visualisation, creative use of material, composition, construction, finish and overall presentation; the official instructions prohibit additional material. Use permitted practice materials and avoid habits that depend on bringing tools the actual test does not allow.
MFM candidates should practise interpreting a case study, identifying the decision, comparing constraints and communicating a reasoned recommendation. MFTech candidates should review relevant engineering fundamentals in addition to general aptitude; the bulletin says the paper includes some engineering-field questions but does not provide a complete topic list in its summary. MDes, MFM and MFTech applicants should rehearse concise, evidence-based interview answers about their interests and choices. These are preparation methods, not additional official scoring criteria.
A practical weekly routine
Use a repeatable cycle rather than changing resources every week: one diagnostic, targeted practice, timed sections and a review session. For BDes, give time to both GAT and CAT and add model-making practice as the exam approaches. For BFTech, split GAT A and B practice and check the exact Section B topics. For MDes, include CAT and interview explanation; for MFM, add case-study work; for MFTech, add technical revision. A combined programme applicant should track each merit route separately.
In the final phase, do full-length practice at the listed durations, review the official instructions, and identify travel and exam-day requirements from the issued admit card. Do not mistake a mock score for a predicted rank or a past cutoff. Your next action is to select the right programme row in the 2027 bulletin and turn its component weights into your own weekly study allocation.
