Register for the correct TOEFL iBT appointment
TOEFL iBT registration is handled through ETS, while an application to a university or programme is a separate process. Before opening the registration form, confirm that the receiving programme accepts TOEFL iBT, your chosen delivery mode and the score scale attached to your test date. Record the programme's score-receipt deadline; a booking confirmation only reserves a test appointment and does not submit an admissions application.
ETS recommends choosing a test date at least two to three months before your earliest admissions deadline and registering four months before the desired test date. These are planning recommendations, not mandatory lead times. They allow space to find a suitable slot, receive results, arrange official score delivery and retake if needed. The actual appointment choices depend on location, mode and current availability in the ETS account.
Steps in the ETS registration process
- Choose the location and test mode. TOEFL iBT is offered on a computer at an authorized test centre or as Home Edition under live remote proctoring. Check the receiving institution's mode policy first. Home testing also requires a compatible setup and room that meet ETS requirements.
- Create or check your ETS account. Use a personal email address you can access through test day and result release. If you already have an account, check that your identifying details are current before scheduling.
- Match your registration to your identification. ETS requires your name and date of birth to match the test-day ID. Country and citizenship affect which documents are accepted, so use ETS's location-specific ID page rather than assuming a passport or other document is valid in every case. Contact TOEFL Services before registration if your name has changed or a discrepancy needs resolving.
- Search for an appointment. Select the test location or Home Edition option and review available appointments in the ETS booking flow. Test-centre availability is described by ETS as more than 170 administrations per year, but that headline does not guarantee a seat in a particular city or on a preferred day. Home Edition is listed 24 hours per day on four days a week and requires at least 24 hours' advance registration.
- Review the total fee and policies. Fees vary by location and may differ for late booking, rescheduling, score reports or other services. Check the total displayed before checkout, payment rules, cancellation conditions and refund terms. Save the confirmation and payment receipt.
- Check accommodations before registering. If you need disability or health-related accommodations, request approval through ETS before booking. ETS's 2026-27 Bulletin says complete paperwork review takes approximately four to six weeks, so submit early enough for a decision before the appointment.
- Save the appointment confirmation. Keep the date, start time, location or Home Edition instructions and appointment number. Review current test-day guidance and ID requirements before the exam.
Registration windows and appointment availability
The ETS 2026-27 Information Bulletin says regular online registration closes seven full days before the selected test date and express online registration closes two days before. The bulletin states it applies from July 2026 through June 2027 and may change without notice. These are outer registration cutoffs, not a promise that an appointment remains available until then. Phone registration may have separate rules, and late registration may cost more. Use the current online booking page to confirm what is actually available.
There is no single annual application form, admit card release date or common national TOEFL examination date. The selected appointment confirmation and ETS account provide the test-specific instructions. If a university asks for a test confirmation, clarify which document it needs; do not mistake a university application receipt for the ETS appointment record.
Fees, including the India page observation
The ETS Bulletin says the test fee varies by location and directs candidates to select their country or location for current rates. ETS India displayed a TOEFL iBT registration fee of ₹15,729 when its fees page was opened on 28 October 2026. It did not show an effective date, so that figure is only an access-date observation; do not assume it will be the amount at a later checkout. Other service charges can apply. Check the current ETS India fee table and the amount in the booking flow before payment.
The registration fee is distinct from a university's application fee, tuition, visa charge or document-evaluation cost. It may also differ from a TOEFL ITP or TOEFL Essentials price. Do not compare fees across test products without checking that the test type and service are the same. A payment receipt confirms a transaction but does not itself prove that the test appointment was successfully booked; retain the ETS confirmation as well.
Test-day identity and confirmation
The identification name must match the registration record. ETS says candidates who do not meet the ID rules may not be allowed to test and may not receive a fee refund. Check the current ETS ID page for your test country and citizenship, and contact ETS before the test if a document or name variation is uncertain. For Home Edition, confirm the computer, room and equipment checklist in advance and follow the official check-in steps. For a centre appointment, use the named centre and arrival instructions on the confirmation.
Candidates aged 15 or younger have additional adult-accompaniment guidance at centres. Candidates seeking accommodations should wait for ETS approval before registering, as required by the Bulletin. These requirements are separate from academic eligibility for a university course.
After you book: scores and recipients
ETS says scores are generally available in the online account three days after the test; the expected result date is displayed when the test ends. If your programme requires official reports sent directly from ETS, check recipient names, codes and delivery conditions before and after the test. ETS's current score page and the 2026-27 Bulletin conflict on when free score recipients may be changed. Because one says 10 p.m. on test day and the Bulletin says 10 p.m. the day before, verify the current account instructions rather than relying on a remembered cutoff.
For tests from 21 January 2026, the report uses the 1-6 scale and includes a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint during a two-year transition. Ask the institution which value it wants. The account score appearing is not the same as the university confirming receipt or completing its application review. Check the receiving programme's portal or contact it if the official report does not appear by its stated deadline.
Before you submit payment
Confirm the following in one place: exact programme and intake, test type and mode accepted, current score scale and minimums, score deadline, appointment availability, current local fee, ID rules, accommodation approval if needed, cancellation/rescheduling rules and score-report recipient instructions. If a 2027 admission date or rule is not posted, record it as unannounced and check the programme again later. TOEFL iBT has rolling appointment availability; no new annual exam date should be inferred from an older bulletin or calendar entry.
