How to find colleges that accept TOEFL iBT
There is no one permanently complete college list that answers whether your TOEFL score will meet every course's requirement. ETS offers an institution and destination search for candidates to explore universities and programmes that recognize TOEFL scores. ETS says its scores are accepted by more than 13,500 institutions in over 160 countries, but that global count is not a promise that every programme, degree level, campus or test mode accepts every TOEFL product.
Start with the ETS Where to Study search, then verify the exact institution and programme on its own current admissions page. Record the programme name, campus, degree level, intake year and source date. A university-level result is a lead; it is not final proof for a specific course or applicant.
Verify the exact programme policy
For each programme on your shortlist, check these questions before booking:
- Does the current admissions page name TOEFL iBT specifically? Do not assume that acceptance of TOEFL iBT includes TOEFL ITP, TOEFL Essentials, a practice test or another English assessment.
- Does the programme accept your intended delivery mode, test centre or Home Edition? ETS offers both, but the institution decides what it accepts.
- What is the minimum overall score, and are section minimums listed? Capture the test type, degree level, programme, intake and date of the policy.
- Is the requirement stated on the post-21 January 2026 1-6 scale, the legacy 0-120 scale, or both? During the two-year transition, ETS reports a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint for newer tests, but the institution determines how it applies its threshold.
- Does the programme accept MyBest scores or require all sections from one test date?
- How recent must the result be, and when must an official ETS report arrive?
- Is TOEFL only an English-language condition, or is it part of an additional admission or visa process? Follow the institution and relevant government authority for those separate requirements.
ETS states that minimum score requirements vary by institution, programme and degree level. A department can set a higher threshold than a general graduate admissions page, and an undergraduate course may use a different rule from a graduate programme at the same institution. When the public pages conflict, contact the relevant admissions office and keep the response with the programme name and intended intake.
Use a route-qualified shortlist
Build a small comparison table instead of copying a large unfiltered list. Useful columns are institution, campus, programme, degree level, intended intake, exact test type, accepted delivery mode, total score threshold, section minima, score scale, MyBest policy, score-recipient instructions, score validity and official-source date. Include a link to the specific programme requirement, not merely a homepage or an ETS directory result.
This detail matters because “accepts TOEFL” is not the same as “this programme accepts this test report for this application.” A directory can help locate destinations, but only the receiving programme can confirm its current admission conditions. Recheck every entry before paying for a test and again before submitting the application, particularly when a new intake bulletin is released.
How the 2026 score update affects a shortlist
The TOEFL iBT format and reporting scale changed on 21 January 2026. Reports for tests on or after that date use four section scores and an overall 1-6 scale in half-point increments. ETS also provides a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint during a two-year transition after January 2026. Institutions are updating their requirements at different times, and some pages may still display a legacy threshold.
Do not convert or compare a score without checking the exact test date and official score report. If a programme lists only 0-120, ask whether it uses the comparable total from a post-2026 report and whether any section threshold applies. If it lists a 1-6 minimum, confirm that the stated rule applies to your degree level and intake. Keep both the answer and the page date in your comparison table.
The score report is evidence of English-language performance, not an admission offer. A programme may also consider academic transcripts, prerequisite coursework, recommendations, a portfolio, interview, separate entrance test or other application materials. Meeting the TOEFL threshold satisfies only the language condition identified by that programme. It does not guarantee a seat or replace its application route.
Check delivery mode and score selection
The current ETS choices are a computer-based authorized test-centre appointment and Home Edition with a live human remote proctor. Ask whether your programme accepts the specific mode you plan to take. If the admission page uses only the word “TOEFL,” do not infer mode acceptance; request confirmation from the programme.
MyBest combines a candidate's best section scores across test dates. Its use is also institution-specific. Ask whether the programme accepts MyBest, requires scores from one sitting or applies any recency rule to each section. A general statement that a university recognizes TOEFL does not settle this policy for every department.
ETS says scores are available in the account three days after testing and are valid for two years. The programme may specify an earlier score-receipt deadline or a shorter practical window for its application. Find out whether you must arrange direct reporting from ETS and which recipient to select. ETS's current score page and 2026-27 Bulletin differ on the cutoff to change free score recipients; check the current account instructions rather than relying on an old checklist.
A careful search workflow
- Search ETS's destination tool by country and institution to find places to investigate.
- Open the institution's current English-language requirement page, then the department or programme page.
- Match the page to the same degree, campus, delivery mode and intake you intend to apply to.
- Record the published score scale, total and section minima, MyBest and report-delivery policy.
- If any item is ambiguous, ask admissions staff in writing and save the answer.
- Recheck after the institution publishes its next intake information and before sending scores.
Do not use a third-party list as the final authority or assume that a previous-year requirement remains current. The right answer is the programme's policy for your application year and test report. Where that has not yet been published, record “not confirmed for this intake” and return to the official page later; do not reuse an old threshold as a confirmed new rule.
Acceptance is not counselling or admission
TOEFL iBT is a language assessment. ETS reports the score; each institution uses it under its own admissions policy. There is no central TOEFL counselling process or exam-wide seat allocation. A candidate who finds a programme that accepts the test must still apply through that institution's own route and meet its academic, document, deadline and selection requirements.
Use the ETS search to generate leads and the current programme page to validate each one. Keep your shortlist narrow enough to verify thoroughly. The programme-specific entry, with the test type, mode, score scale, intake and source date recorded, is more useful than an undated list of names.
