What “syllabus” means for TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT does not publish a school-subject syllabus with chapters to memorize. Its current content guide describes task families that assess academic English across Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The task list changed with the revised adaptive format effective 21 January 2026. Use that current task map to structure preparation and use ETS's live sample materials to see how instructions appear. Older task lists may describe the pre-2026 version.
ETS lists approximate section counts of 50 Reading items, 47 Listening items, 12 Writing items and 11 Speaking items, with base times of about 30, 29, 23 and 8 minutes respectively. It says to allow roughly two hours excluding directions and warns that adaptive delivery can change item counts and test time. These values describe the current guide, not a guaranteed fixed question paper.
Reading task families
Reading includes Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. The first brings attention to vocabulary and meaning in context. Daily-life reading uses practical written material; academic reading asks candidates to work through extended subject-related text. ETS lists the task names but does not supply a closed list of academic disciplines or chapters to memorize on the content page.
Preparation should cover more than one reading style. Practise identifying the purpose of a short notice, locating a relevant detail and following instructions. For academic passages, track the central point, evidence, examples, contrast and how a paragraph connects to the next. When an item asks for a detail, return to the relevant text rather than relying on a general impression. Build vocabulary from reading and context, but avoid assuming that a memorized word list represents the complete syllabus.
Listening task families
Listening includes Listen and Choose a Response, a conversation, an announcement and an academic talk. The labels show a range from brief exchanges to longer spoken communication. ETS does not publish a fixed list of lecture topics in the task table, so preparation should focus on understanding spoken English rather than memorizing content from a particular subject.
Practise recognizing who is speaking, the purpose of the exchange and what action or explanation follows. In a conversation, listen for the speakers' goals and any change in plan. In an announcement, identify the key information and what the listener must do. In an academic talk, capture the main idea, the structure of the explanation and examples that support it. These are practical study priorities, not claims about item weights or an official scoring rubric.
Writing task families
Writing covers Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. This is not simply a long-essay section. Candidates need to practise accurate sentence construction, clear purpose-driven email writing and a concise contribution to an academic discussion. ETS lists 12 items and approximately 23 base minutes for this section.
For sentence building, work on word order, agreement and complete meaning. For an email, identify the intended reader and the task before drafting; include the requested information in a readable order. For an academic discussion response, answer the question, state a position and support it with a relevant reason or example. Review your work for clarity and grammar. These suggestions are preparation guidance; the current ETS task instructions and scoring guidance should control exact response expectations.
Speaking task families
Speaking includes Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. ETS lists 11 items and approximately 8 base minutes. The tasks require both close listening and spoken production. Practise repeating a heard phrase accurately, then practise answering unfamiliar questions in your own words. A useful response is direct, understandable and complete; extending an answer with a relevant reason or example can help you develop it without drifting off topic.
Record short responses and listen for pace, pronunciation, missing words and whether your answer addresses the question. This is a self-study technique, not an ETS score prediction. Avoid memorizing a single response for an unknown interview question. Use the current sample test to understand the on-screen interaction and the current task names.
The score scale and what it does not add to the syllabus
For TOEFL iBT tests from 21 January 2026, reports use section and overall scores on a 1-6 scale in half-point increments. During the two-year transition after January 2026, ETS also supplies a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint. This scoring change does not create new school-subject chapters; it changes how performance is reported. An institution may still publish a legacy 0-120 requirement, so confirm which scale it accepts for your test date and programme.
There is no ETS pass/fail mark. A university or programme determines its English-language threshold, which may include an overall and section minimum. A candidate's study target should therefore start with the exact programme's published policy rather than a universal target score. MyBest and test-mode acceptance are also receiving-institution decisions.
A focused way to study the task map
- Start with the official ETS content page and one current sample to confirm you are using the post-21 January 2026 task families.
- Keep a task checklist for all four skills and mark which tasks feel unfamiliar, slow or error-prone.
- Practise one task at a time, then combine tasks into a timed session. Review incorrect answers and identify whether the issue was comprehension, vocabulary, organization, grammar, pacing or instructions.
- Use reading and listening practice to build comprehension; use short speaking and writing responses to build clear production under time limits.
- Complete a full practice experience under realistic conditions before the test. Use it to set priorities, not to promise a final score.
- Recheck official ETS instructions and the receiving programme's accepted test type, mode and score scale before booking.
ETS's India preparation page links TestReady, practice resources and an official eight-week planner. The planner is one option, not a mandatory schedule or guarantee. Adapt the pace to your starting point, available hours, language background and application deadline. If the exact current task instructions change, follow the live ETS content and sample pages rather than preserving a stale syllabus checklist.
What is outside this syllabus guide
This page describes TOEFL iBT. It does not define TOEFL ITP, TOEFL Essentials or any other English test. It also does not establish a university's academic prerequisites, admission route, scholarship rule or visa requirement. Those decisions belong to the institution or relevant authority. Use the task map for preparation, then confirm the application requirement and score use with the exact programme.
