TOEFL iBT dates are selected by appointment
TOEFL iBT does not have one annual national examination date for all applicants. Candidates choose an available appointment through ETS for an authorized test centre or Home Edition. As of 28 October 2026, ETS describes centre testing as offered more than 170 times a year. Home Edition appointments are listed 24 hours a day, four days each week, with registration at least 24 hours in advance. The actual dates depend on location, mode and current slot availability, so use the ETS account to select a real appointment rather than relying on a third-party calendar.
For an application plan, the next milestone is the earliest deadline among the programmes to which you will apply. ETS recommends taking TOEFL iBT at least two to three months before that admissions deadline and registering about four months before your desired test date. This is planning guidance, not a universal admissions rule or a guaranteed appointment window. It gives time for an available slot, score posting, official score delivery, possible retesting and any institution-specific processing.
Work backward from the score-receipt deadline
Record the date by which the programme must receive your score, not only the date by which you submit an application. Ask whether the institution needs an official ETS report, what recipient code or programme destination to select, and whether the account score report is sufficient for initial review. ETS says scores usually appear in the account three days after the test; the expected date is shown at the end of the test. Delivery and institutional processing can add time, so avoid booking exactly at the application cutoff.
The ETS recommendation to test two to three months before the earliest deadline is a useful buffer, especially if you might retake the test. The 2026-27 Information Bulletin says candidates cannot test more than once in a three-day period. That rule sets a minimum gap between sittings; it does not guarantee a slot or enough time for preparation and score delivery. If you need a second attempt, leave room to understand the first report and confirm how the institution evaluates multiple scores.
Registration deadlines are booking cutoffs, not exam dates
The 2026-27 TOEFL iBT Information Bulletin says regular online registration closes seven full days before the test date. Express online registration closes two days before and may carry an additional fee. These are the bulletin's published policy windows for July 2026 through June 2027; the bulletin states policies may change without notice. Phone registration has separate rules. The ETS account may show no appointment at a location even while a general registration window remains open, so treat the selected slot and checkout confirmation as controlling.
For Home Edition, ETS says registration must be made at least 24 hours before the chosen appointment. Check the equipment and room conditions first. A candidate who cannot meet the technical or environment requirements should look for a test-centre appointment instead, if the receiving programme accepts that mode.
The official ETS registration guide advises candidates to register four months before the preferred test date. This is more conservative than the bulletin's final registration cutoff and should be read as planning advice to obtain a suitable seat, not a mandatory four-month application deadline. Local demand, travel plans, required accommodation approval and application dates may call for even earlier booking.
Result milestones and the score scale
ETS says account results are available three days after the test date and displays the expected date at the end of the test. Electronic score reports are valid for two years from the test date. PDF report timing on ETS pages is described slightly differently, from one day to 24-48 hours after electronic results, so check your own account rather than promising a precise PDF hour. If an application needs an official report sent directly to a university, include that step in your personal timeline.
The TOEFL iBT score format changed on 21 January 2026. For tests from that date, section and overall results use a 1-6 scale in half-point increments. During the two-year transition, ETS also reports a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint. A date calendar cannot predict how quickly a university will update its requirement; verify whether your programme asks for the new scale, a legacy total or both, and allow time for the correct report to reach it.
A usable planning sequence
- Find the exact programme and intake, then write down its score-receipt deadline and test-type/mode policy.
- Choose a desired test date at least two to three months before the earliest application deadline where possible; allow extra time for a retake or accommodations.
- Check live ETS appointments for your location and intended mode. Confirm the fee, ID rules and equipment requirements before paying.
- Register through the ETS account and save the appointment confirmation. Put the test date, expected account score date and institution's score-receipt deadline on one calendar.
- After testing, check the expected score date shown at the test end and monitor the ETS account. Order or verify direct score delivery according to the institution's current instructions.
- If the result is below a programme's requirement, check the next available slot, retake interval and whether the programme accepts multiple sittings or MyBest before booking again.
The four-month ETS recommendation is a prudent booking target. It is separate from the seven-day regular and two-day express registration cutoffs in the 2026-27 Bulletin. Keeping those two kinds of timing distinct avoids treating a last-minute exception as the normal plan.
Dates and fee information to recheck
ETS does not provide a single fixed annual calendar that applies to every TOEFL iBT candidate. The booking page is the right place to find current appointments, and the programme's own page is the right place to find the application deadline. As of 28 October 2026, no announced 2027 TOEFL exam calendar was identified in the official sources reviewed for this page; candidates should use live appointments rather than infer 2027 dates from the count of annual test administrations.
Test fees are location-specific. ETS India showed a registration amount of ₹15,729 when its fee page was opened on 28 October 2026, but the page did not show an effective date. That amount is an observation from the access date, not a guaranteed fee for a later appointment. Check the live fee page and checkout total before paying. Service fees may apply to late registration, rescheduling, additional reports or other requests.
The practical next action is to identify the score-receipt deadline for each intended programme, then search ETS's live appointment calendar for a compatible test mode. Save the confirmation and plan backwards from the score date. If an institution has not published its next-intake deadline or score policy, mark that item unannounced and check again; do not convert an older cycle's date into a new one.
