When TOEFL iBT results appear
ETS says official TOEFL iBT scores are posted to the test taker's ETS account three days after the test date. The exact expected date is displayed at the end of the test, and ETS sends an email when scores are available. Use that account date for planning rather than an old result calendar or a promised universal time of day. Processing can affect a specific score, so the displayed date and account status are the practical references.
ETS describes scores as valid for two years from the test date and says it will not report or send scores after that period. Check when the receiving institution requires a valid score: application submission, file review and enrollment can happen at different times. A score that is still valid when you submit an application may no longer meet a later deadline if the programme requires it to remain valid through review.
Find and save the score report
Sign in to the same ETS account used to register and open the TOEFL iBT score report after the availability notice. The test taker can download a PDF report after electronic scores are available; ETS pages describe the wait as one day on one score page and 24-48 hours on another, so check the account for the actual download link. Save a copy for your records and note the test date, score scale and section values.
If a university requires official scores, follow its instructions for sending a report through ETS. Confirm the exact institution or programme recipient and whether it requires direct delivery. An account screenshot or downloaded PDF may be useful for your own records, but it is not necessarily a substitute for an official score report sent from ETS. Check the programme portal or ask admissions staff to confirm receipt.
ETS's current score guidance says the test fee includes up to four free official score reports that can be selected through the ETS account until 10 p.m. on test day. The 2026-27 Bulletin gives another cutoff, saying recipient changes are allowed until 10 p.m. local test-centre time on the day before the test. These official statements conflict. Verify the current ETS account instructions or ask TOEFL Services instead of relying on either cutoff as universal. Additional report fees vary by location.
How to read a post-21 January 2026 report
For tests taken on or after 21 January 2026, ETS reports four section scores and an overall score on a 1-6 scale in half-point increments. The overall score is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band. During a two-year transition after January 2026, ETS also provides a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint. Preserve the scale and test date whenever sharing or comparing a result.
An older TOEFL iBT score report may use the pre-2026 0-120 scale and a previous test format. Do not describe that score as if it came from the revised test or convert individual sections without the official comparison guidance. For a new score, use the 1-6 result first and provide the comparable total if the institution still asks for 0-120. ETS notes that institutions are updating at different times; confirm which value and any section minimums the programme currently requires.
The report reflects performance on the test. ETS does not set a passing score. Each institution sets its own minimums, which can vary by programme and degree level. Some institutions may accept MyBest, which combines a candidate's strongest section scores from multiple test dates, while others may require results from one sitting. A score report cannot answer those policy questions on its own; use the exact programme's admissions instructions.
What to do after scores post
First, check that the report is for the intended TOEFL iBT test date and that the name and account details are correct. Next, compare the overall and section scores with the exact programme policy. Confirm the accepted scale, test mode, score age, MyBest treatment and direct-report requirement. If a score is missing, inaccurate or delayed, contact ETS through official TOEFL Services and keep the appointment number and test date available.
If your result meets the stated language condition, complete the remaining application steps. A qualifying English score is not an admission offer and does not replace academic eligibility, prerequisite subjects, documents, interviews, portfolios, deadlines or a separate entrance test where required. If the report is below a required minimum, ask the programme whether a retake is accepted and whether the score must arrive before a specific deadline. ETS's 2026-27 Bulletin does not permit more than one test within a three-day period, but an available appointment and preparation time are separate considerations.
Score reviews and recipient decisions
Before ordering extra reports, verify how the institution wants results delivered. Check any recipient code, programme name, test type, deadline and accepted score scale. If you change your destination after registering, consult the current ETS account because the official score guidance and Bulletin differ on the no-charge recipient-change cutoff. Do not infer that every score recipient accepts the same report mode or score-selection method.
If you believe a score needs review, consult ETS's current score-review policy for the relevant section and deadline. Fees and procedures can change, and the reviewed score may affect whether a report has already been sent. This page does not state a universal appeal fee or promise a changed score. Follow the official policy that applies to your test date.
Result checklist
- Check the expected result date shown at test end and the ETS account for the official report.
- Record the date of testing and use the correct scale: 1-6 for tests from 21 January 2026, with a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint during the transition.
- Confirm the score remains within ETS's two-year reporting validity and the programme's own recency window.
- Check overall and section minimums, test-mode acceptance, MyBest policy and direct score delivery with the exact programme.
- Resolve the free-recipient timing conflict through current ETS account guidance.
- Treat meeting an English-language score requirement as one application condition, not a guarantee of admission.
There is no central TOEFL result portal for university seat allocation or counselling. ETS reports the test result; universities and programmes decide how to use it within their own admissions process. If a future intake has not published score rules, label that requirement unannounced and verify it when the programme releases current guidance.
