Who may sit TOEFL iBT?
ETS states that TOEFL iBT has no age restriction. The test is designed around academic English at approximately first-year university level. For a candidate aged 15 or younger who tests at a test centre, ETS suggests being accompanied by a parent or other authorized adult aged 18 or older; ETS says that adult must complete and sign a release form at the centre. This is guidance for younger test takers, not a minimum age, school qualification or guarantee that a university will admit them.
TOEFL iBT tests English proficiency. It does not impose the academic prerequisites for a degree, determine a candidate's visa eligibility by itself, or replace an institution's admission review. If you are applying to a programme, check academic qualifications and English-language requirements separately. A candidate can be allowed to take the test and still not meet a programme's required score, accepted test type or score-recency rule.
Match the test to the requirement
Before booking, identify the exact institution, programme, degree level and intended intake. Confirm that the current admission page names TOEFL iBT, rather than TOEFL ITP, TOEFL Essentials or another test. Then record any overall minimum and section minimums, the score scale requested, and whether the institution accepts the test mode you intend to use. A broad statement that an institution accepts TOEFL does not necessarily apply to every programme or delivery mode.
The score scale depends on the test date. For TOEFL iBT tests from 21 January 2026, ETS reports section and overall scores on a 1-6 scale in half-point increments. ETS also supplies a comparable overall 0-120 midpoint during a two-year transition after January 2026. A university may still display an older 0-120 threshold while it updates its policy. Do not convert a score yourself or assume that every institution applies the transition value in the same way. Ask the programme which scale and minimum it uses for your application.
ETS sets no pass/fail score. Each institution determines its own requirements, and ETS says minima vary by institution, programme and degree level. Some programmes may set section minima or have different language rules for undergraduate, postgraduate, exchange, scholarship or professional applicants. Confirm the actual rule in the current programme material; a search result, general university page or older applicant discussion may describe a different route or year.
Institution policies can differ by mode and score selection
The current ETS testing choices are an authorized test-centre computer test and Home Edition, taken at home under live remote proctoring. Universities decide which version they accept. A programme may accept one mode and not the other, or impose additional identity, score reporting or verification rules. Check the receiving institution's current language-requirement page before selecting a test mode, especially when an application system lists only a broad TOEFL label.
ETS MyBest combines a candidate's best section scores across test dates. Whether an institution accepts MyBest is also its own policy. A programme that accepts TOEFL scores may still require scores from one sitting or set an additional condition. If the policy is not explicit, ask admissions staff in writing and retain their response. Do not assume a composite that ETS reports will automatically satisfy a programme's conditions.
Registration and identity checks
There is no common Indian domicile, reservation category or school-stream requirement to sit TOEFL iBT. Testing rules are instead set by ETS and can depend on the test location and the candidate's ID. ETS warns that the name and date of birth in the registration account must exactly match the ID presented on test day. A mismatch can prevent admission to the test and the test fee may not be refunded. Use the ETS ID Requirements page for the specific country and citizenship situation, and correct account details before booking if needed.
Candidates who require disability or health-related testing accommodations need to request them through ETS and receive approval before registering. The 2026-27 TOEFL iBT Information Bulletin says review of a complete request and supporting paperwork takes approximately four to six weeks. Submit the request early enough to receive a decision before choosing a test appointment. The bulletin is stated to apply from July 2026 through June 2027 and may change; recheck ETS's current accommodations instructions.
For Home Edition, verify that your computer, room and connection satisfy ETS's requirements before paying. If your space or equipment does not qualify, consider a test centre, but only after confirming that the institution accepts that mode. For a test centre, check the accepted ID and appointment instructions for that location. These checks are separate from university application eligibility.
Attempts and score recency
The 2026-27 ETS Bulletin says there is no overall limit on the number of TOEFL iBT attempts, but candidates may not test more than once in a three-day period. This is an ETS scheduling rule; an institution may have separate instructions about which sitting to submit, how many scores it considers or whether it accepts MyBest. Check both policies before planning a retake.
ETS says TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years from the test date and are not reported or sent after that period. A programme may require the result to be valid on a particular date, such as the application deadline, document review or enrollment. Ask which date controls. If your score will expire near the time the institution evaluates the application, ask whether you need a new test rather than relying on the report's validity on the day you submit the form.
A quick eligibility check
Use these questions before paying:
- Are you taking TOEFL iBT, the exact test type named by the receiving programme?
- Does that programme accept your chosen test mode: authorized centre or Home Edition?
- Does your score meet both the overall and any section minimum on the scale the programme currently uses?
- Does the programme accept MyBest or require a single sitting?
- Will your score remain valid on the date the programme specifies?
- Does your registration name and date of birth match your test-day ID, and do you meet location-specific ID rules?
- If you need accommodations, can ETS review and approve them before registration?
Passing this checklist means you have checked test and programme conditions; it is not an admission decision. TOEFL iBT itself has no pass/fail score, and academic admission may require transcripts, prerequisites, recommendations or other tests. The institution's current programme page and written admissions guidance control where their terms differ from general ETS material.
What is not a universal rule
No universal TOEFL score guarantees admission, and there is no central TOEFL counselling or seat-allocation system. ETS provides a destination search to help candidates identify institutions that recognize the test, but each programme sets its own score requirements and application route. A test result measures English proficiency; the receiving institution decides what that result means in its admissions process.
If the institution has not yet published a policy for the intended intake, do not treat last year's threshold as a confirmed current rule. Use it only as dated historical context if helpful, then contact the programme and recheck its official page when the new intake information is released. Record the answer with the programme name, degree level, test type, delivery mode and intake year so that a rule for one course is not accidentally applied to another.
