WBJEE-2026 used two OMR papers on one day: Mathematics in Paper I and Physics plus Chemistry in Paper II. Mathematics had 75 questions for 100 marks; Physics and Chemistry each had 40 questions for 50 marks. The scoring rules vary by question category, so “negative marking” is not one flat rule across the paper. These are the rules for the 2026-27 admission edition, as set out in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board’s 2026 bulletin.
Paper structure and marks
All questions were multiple choice with four options. Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry had different question counts and maximum marks; do not compare subject scores without accounting for those denominators. Each paper lasted two hours. The bulletin scheduled both on 24 May 2026, with a one-hour gap between the papers. Those dates are completed 2026 exam dates, not a future-year schedule.
Three categories have different scoring rules
Category I questions have one correct option and are worth one mark. A wrong response, including marking more than one option, loses 0.25 mark; a blank earns zero. Category II also has one correct option, but is worth two marks. A wrong or multiple-option response loses 0.5 mark; a blank again earns zero.
Category III is different: one or more options may be correct, and the question is worth two marks. Mark every correct option and no incorrect option to earn the full two marks. If you select only some of the correct options and no wrong option, WBJEEB awards partial marks using this formula:
2 × (number of correct options selected ÷ total number of correct options)
For example, if two choices are correct and you select one of them without selecting a wrong choice, the formula gives 2 × (1 ÷ 2) = 1 mark. If your selection includes any incorrect option, the response receives zero for that Category III question, even if you also selected a correct option. Leaving it blank also earns zero.
That difference matters when deciding how certain you are. In Categories I and II, a wrong answer costs a quarter of the question’s value. In Category III, partial credit is possible only when the selected set contains no wrong option. A response that includes a wrong option does not receive a negative mark in Category III; it receives zero. Do not apply the Category I or II penalty to Category III, or assume the partial-credit rule rescues a selection that includes an incorrect choice.
OMR handling is part of the answer
WBJEE-2026 used a specially designed OMR sheet. The bulletin instructed candidates to darken the chosen bubble completely with a blue or black ink ballpoint pen supplied by the Board. Incomplete shading, pencil, ticks, crosses, overwriting, erasing or marks outside the bubble can make a response ambiguous and may result in cancellation of the OMR sheet. Once a response is marked, it cannot be edited, changed, erased or modified.
This makes question solving and answer recording separate tasks. Check the question number before shading, then confirm that only the intended option is marked. The question paper may have different versions; the version code is printed on the question paper’s facing sheet. Follow the booklet and OMR instructions provided at the centre rather than relying on a practice sheet’s layout.
Which paper combination gives which rank
The papers you take affect which merit rank you can receive. Candidates who appear in both Paper I and Paper II are eligible for the General Merit Rank (GMR) and Pharmacy Merit Rank (PMR). Candidates who appear only in Paper II can receive PMR, which is used for Pharmacy admissions except at Jadavpur University. A candidate appearing only in Paper I is not eligible for a rank under the 2026 bulletin.
For GMR, WBJEEB combines the total scores from Paper I and Paper II. PMR is based on Paper II alone, which contains Physics and Chemistry. The bulletin says admission to Engineering, Technology and Architecture courses, and Pharmacy at Jadavpur University, is based on GMR. Other Pharmacy admissions, including Pharm.D., use PMR. Therefore, a Mathematics-only score is not enough to obtain a 2026 rank, and a Paper II score alone is not the Engineering rank basis.
How to use the pattern in practice
The maximum raw score across both papers is 200 before penalties: 100 in Mathematics and 50 each in Physics and Chemistry. The timetable gives two hours to each paper, which averages 96 seconds per Mathematics question and 90 seconds per question across Physics and Chemistry combined. These are calculations from the official question counts and timings, not prescribed pacing targets. Within Category III, allow enough time to check the option set because a wrong selection removes the chance of partial marks.
Practise filling OMR responses with the same care as solving questions, and use a paper version that includes Category III questions. Review mistakes by category: a wrong Category I/II response loses marks, while a Category III response with any wrong option gets zero. Check that your chosen papers match the rank required for the course you plan to pursue.
