MBBS Course i.e. Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery, is a professional course for which students are awarded a degree in medicine and surgery on successful completion of the course. The aim of the MBBS course is to provide quality education and training to help students contribute to the growing area of health and medicine.
MBBS Course is governed by the Medical Council of India and has been divided on a semester of four and a half years, followed by a mandatory internship for one year.
Eligibility for MBBS
Normally, the minimum eligibility for the course is 10 + 2, with subjects of physics, chemistry, and biology having at least 50% marks. There are English mandatory subjects for eligibility in many universities and colleges. However, AIIMS requires 60% for general category candidates and 50% for SC / ST candidates.
However, this is not the only criterion for admission; Students will have to enter the entrance examination to prove fit for admission to any medical college. The main entrance exam is the NEET entrance examination and the AIIMS exam. Also, with these prerequisites, some universities like Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi restrict the age of candidates between 17 to 25. On the other hand, AIIMS has set a lower 17-year limit for any candidate.

Duration of MBBS Course
The duration of the course is five and a half years, in which a one-year rotation internship is included. Courses are usually divided into 9 semesters of 6 months. Apart from regular courses, students also have to participate in the ward and out-patient departments which give the student the real-life experience.
Except for three medical colleges of India (AIIMS, JIPMER and AFMC), Admission in all government and non-governmental medical and dental colleges, is done by NEET examinations only. Let us tell you that in India the government quota of government medical colleges is 15 percent while the state government quota is 85 percent. Both types of quotes are admissible only for the students who have written proper examination, whether it is the state government quota or the central government’s quota.
MBBS Admissions Form
Forms are usually available online for the entrance examination. Forms for NEET are available in the last week of December and the entrance exam usually takes place in the last week of May. Similarly, after the results of 10 + 2, there are other entrance exams in the months of May-June.
Once the results of the admission test are announced, the students are called for consultation on the basis of merit considered in both the marks of qualifying examination (10 + 2) and marks obtained in the entrance examination.
Structure of MBBS Entrance Examination
The method of testing is an objective type test, in which the basic knowledge of the candidate is tested on the basis of subjects studied in CBSE, NCERT and COBSE listed boards with subjects studied in 10 + 1 and 10 + 2. The main objective of the entrance examination is to evaluate the basic knowledge and qualifications of candidates who take prestigious courses of MBBS. The colleges offering this course believe that enrolled students have prior knowledge of the basic principles of taught courses.
MBBS Course, Curriculum and Topics
According to the Medical Council of India, the curriculum spreads for 9 semesters, which is four and a half years, followed by a one-year mandatory internship. The curriculum is divided into pre-clinical, which primarily covers the first two semesters of the curriculum focusing on the basic knowledge of various disciplines like body, physiology etc.
The second phase is para-clinical, which focuses on the teaching of topics such as forensic medicine, pathology etc., with three semesters (one and a half years), essential aspect of the syllabus- Community therapy, the third stage is the clinical phase, which includes psychotherapy, Focusing on practical knowledge and practice with topics such as pediatrics etc.

After completion of Graduation in Medicine one can go for Post graduation in Medicine i,e. MD or MS.
The full form of MD is Doctor of Medicine, which is derived from ‘Medicinae Doctor’ of Latin language term, which means Teacher of Medicine. The MD is the highest academic degree in the field of medicine. MBBS degree holders obtain this degree to get distinction in the field of medicine and surgery. The duration of Doctor of Medicine course is 3 years, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, including successful completion of the examination.
The examination for MD is held at the end of 3 academic years which consists of 6 academic semesters. The MD course is more practical than the MBBS course and also it is more research-based. The Medical Council of India is the authority that approves various institutions to offer Doctor of Medicine degree courses.
Because the course involves an intensive study of the relevant topics, one needs to be prepared for the study of mind-boggling. This course is mainly pursued by medical graduates for high salary package.
Branches of MD/MS and its Division
Post-graduation in Medicine is divided broadly into Clinical and non-clinical branches. Both courses are of 3 years duration.
The Non-Clinical Branches can further be divided into
Core non-Clinical – such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry & Microbiology, and
Para Clinical– such as Community Medicine, Pathology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine etc.
The Clinical Branches are also divided into
MD (Medicine related) such as – Radio-Diagnosis, General Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Radiology, (TB and Chest), Psychiatry, Dermatology, sports medicine, emergency medicine and
MS (surgery related) such as- General Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology comes under MS.
Above are the basic subjects available everywhere and depends on the place and university you choose but there are still more subjects you may study, like Medical genetics, Pulmonology, Blood Bank medicine and Family medicine etc.
Other Career Options
Other options in career in medice include profiles of areas like medical officers, administrative, interns, physicians, and clinical researches. After MBBS, the job profile of the Medical Superintendent or Medical Director (MD) is also a promising career option, because it provides a salary package of about 12-15 lakh.
Employment area for MBBS
Medical and surgery is an area which is always in demand. Once the internship is completed, after getting a bachelor’s degree from a prestigious college, someone can get a chance to work as a physician with a doctor or start a personal clinic. Anyone can work as a general practitioner, or pursue expertise and work in that area.
MBBS Course Salary Trends
On an average, the starting salary of a physician is about 6-8 lakh, while a surgeon starts earning 8-9 lakh. Pathologist, pediatrician, gynecologist, orthopedist, cardiologist etc., job profiles of specialists are demanding a salary package of approximately 10 to 12 lakhs. In the case of salary, the radiologist and anesthetist receive the highest pay scale of 12 to 15 lakh.
The work of a medical representative gets around 2 to 5 lakhs, a Chief Medical Officer gets 8 lakhs of payments per year. There is also the work of a dietician and nutrition specialist if someone is interested in the health sector; It pays 2 lakh to 6 lakhs payments annually. On the other hand, a paramedic earns from 2 to 5 lakhs rupees annually.
