What is MD

The full form of MD is Doctor of Medicine, which is derived from  ‘Medicinae Doctor’ of Latin language term, which means Teacher of Medicine. The MD is the highest academic degree in the field of medicine. MBBS degree holders obtain this degree to get distinction in the field of medicine and surgery. The duration of Doctor of Medicine course is 3 years, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, including successful completion of the examination. The examination for MD is held at the end of 3 academic years which consists of 6 academic semesters. The MD course is more practical than the MBBS course and also it is more research-based. The Medical Council of India is the authority that approves various institutions to offer Doctor of Medicine degree courses. Because the course involves an intensive study of the relevant topics, one needs to be prepared for the study of mind-boggling. This course is mainly pursued by medical graduates for high salary package.

Branches of PG in Medicine

Post-graduation in Medicine is divided broadly into Clinical and non-clinical branches. Both courses are of 3 years duration.

The Non-Clinical Branches can further be divided into

Core non-Clinical – such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry & Microbiology, and

Para Clinical– such as  Community Medicine,  Pathology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine etc.

The Clinical Branches are also divided into

MD (Medicine related) such as – Radio-Diagnosis, General Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Radiology, (TB and Chest), Psychiatry, Dermatology, sports medicine, emergency medicine and

MS (surgery related) such as-  General Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology comes under MS.

Above are the basic subjects available everywhere and depends on the place and university you choose but there are still more subjects you may study, like Medical genetics, Pulmonology, Blood Bank medicine and Family medicine etc.

Anaesthesiology

In the topic of anaesthesiology, you are given information about whether or not you feel pain in the whole body or any part of the body with or without consciousness, that is, conscious or unconscious so that major/minor operations of patients can be done. Therefore, you have to study this subject very carefully.

Orthopaedics

This specialization is related to diseases and wounds of the hard-pincer or musculoskeletal system of your body. MBBS students who have studied Orthopedics can do MD in this subject.

Paediatrics

Paediatrics is the branch of medical science that deals with diseases of infants, child, and adolescents. In terms of age, they fall in this category from newborn to adolescent between 10 and 1 6 years. The upper age limit of this category varies from country to country.

Gynaecology

A physician who specializes in treating diseases of the female reproductive organs and providing well-woman health care that focuses primarily on the reproductive organs. Also, he studies the process and complications that may arise during the birth of a child.

Human Anatomy

It is a basic subject taught under medicine. It deals with the topic of anatomy which includes macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the human body.

Biochemistry

This branch of medicine is related to the chemical process occurring inside the human body. Besides, it focuses on understanding the effects of chemical processes on human organs.

Radiotherapy

The focus area of this topic is to give information about X-rays, gamma rays, electron beams or protons to reduce or eliminate disorders like cancer cells in the human body.

Ophthalmology

In this subject, you read about the composition of the eye and how it works. Much information is also given about various diseases of the eyes and their treatment in this subject.

Human Physiology

The subject of Human Physiology provides information about the effect of mechanical, physical, bioelectrical or biochemical functions on humans.

Qualification for PG in Medicine

Eligibility for MD course is limited to those holding MBBS degree. Certification for MD course must be from a university which is accepted by the Medical Council of India. Training is received in medical disciplines which are non-surgical like Internal medicine, Radiology and Pathology etc. The rank obtained in the entrance examination forms the basis for admission. Some institutes may conduct personal interviews as part of the admission process.

How to do PG in Medicine

If you want to do MD, then you must have MBBS, because only then you will be able to do MD. To get admission in the good institute of MD, you have to pass NEET PG exam with good marks, only then you can do this course.

Career after PG in Medicine

You will be able to work in a range of areas like government and private hospitals, public health organizations, military etc or you may opt private practice after completing MBBS and MD. Doctors in India get a lot of respect and money and therefore it is a very respectable and self-satisfying job. As a private practitioner Sky is the limit for a MD degree holder.

If you opt for a job, as we said earlier, the salary is given more in this field than in other fields. MD is given a salary ranging from Rs.2,50,000 / – to Rs.4,00,000 / – at the initial level. According to the rules of the hospital, there may be a slight difference.
