On the exit from college, a question arises: MBA (Master of Business Administration) or PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management). Youth are often confused that what is a difference between MBA and PGDM and which of these courses should they do? It is important to understand the two specialties.
The purpose of both these courses is to make a career in management. The difference is the Degree and Diploma. Many students are hesitant about the latter word: Diploma.
Let’s know a little bit about this Diploma. When a teaching institution is autonomous (i.e., it does not belong to any university) and offers courses in business administration, then it cannot award an MBA degree. It could prepare its own education module. These modules can be changed from time to time according to the needs of the industry. Such institutions award PGDM to the successful students.
As far as the MBA is concerned, this degree can only be given to the educational institution which is affiliated with any university. They study according to the pattern and guidelines decided by the university according to its syllabus. Entry into the best business schools in the country through Management Entrepreneurship Examinations like CAT, XAT, SNAP, NMAT, IIFT, CMAT etc. These schools are affiliated with some or other universities.
Generally, if a PGDM is to be equivalent to an MBA, then its duration is 2 years. One-year PGDM course is not considered equivalent to MBA.

PGDM
PGDM programs generally have 4 semesters in 2 years and sometimes 6 semesters.
This is an IIM-based diploma program recognized by the All India Council of Technology and Education (AICTE). This course has considerable flexibility. Being an autonomous institution, this course is self-motivated and has a very good placement rate.
The All India Council for Technical Education is the statutory body and a national-level council for technical education, under Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, which recognizes courses in both technology and management.
The special point of PGDM is that its syllabus changes every 4-5 years because it is an industry-based advanced course. It is a live program according to its structure. There are also guest lectures, seminars, panel discussions, workshops, etc., so that the students can develop completely.
MBA
The MBA was started in the US to give a scientific approach to Management Skills. MBA is internationally accredited as a Masters Degree in Business Studies. After the MBA, further studies can be done from any university.
The flexibility in the MBA degree is low and the regulation is high. To do an MBA abroad, you have to clear exams like GMAT or GRE.
