CMAT counselling: institutions run the admission process
There is no single NTA counselling round for all CMAT candidates. NTA conducts the examination and declares scores, but its bulletin says it has no role in counselling for management programmes. Candidates apply separately to the institutions they want to join. Each institution publishes its own cutoff and selection procedure, which may include group discussion, personal interview or other steps. Some state or university authorities may coordinate admissions for their own institutions; that process is separate from NTA’s examination work.
After receiving a score, do not wait for a central CMAT choice-filling portal unless a responsible authority announces one for the specific programme. Start an application tracker before results, because some colleges set application deadlines independently. Verify whether the programme accepts the score year on your card and whether a separate form is required.
A stage-by-stage admission path
1. Confirm programme eligibility. Read the college’s current admission page for degree requirements, minimum marks, final-year rules and documents. CMAT exam eligibility does not automatically satisfy admission criteria.
2. Submit the institutional application. Use the college’s official portal, pay its application fee if applicable, and save the acknowledgement. Include the correct programme and campus. A university may have separate forms for different degrees or locations.
3. Check the shortlist rule. Find out whether the CMAT score is a minimum application condition, a shortlist threshold or one part of a composite score. Check the metric: raw marks, percentile or an institution-calculated score. Avoid comparing unlike figures.
4. Complete selection rounds. Follow the institution’s instructions for interview, group discussion, written assessment, document verification or any other stage. Prepare the requested documents and track deadlines in official communication.
5. Evaluate and accept an offer. Compare programme, campus, total cost, scholarships, curriculum and independently reported outcomes. Confirm offer conditions, fee-payment deadlines and refund policy before paying a seat deposit.
This sequence is a planning framework, not a common NTA timetable. Institutions can use different stages, and some may not use every component.
What “counselling” may mean
Some applicants use counselling to describe any post-result admission activity, while a specific authority may use it to mean registration, document verification, choice entry, seat allotment and reporting. Do not assume those mechanisms exist for every CMAT college. Check who operates the process and what decision it controls. A college-led interview process is not the same as a state-level seat-allocation round.
NTA states that it does not collect total seat numbers or reservation criteria for institutions. For availability, category rules, domicile conditions and allotment rounds, consult the relevant institution or the government or university authority that administers those seats. A CMAT scorecard does not itself assign a seat.
Keep a useful tracker
For every programme, record the official page URL and date checked; score year accepted; application deadline and fee; eligibility requirements; cutoff metric; shortlist date; interview or other stages; documents to upload; offer deadline; and contact route. Record updates as they arrive rather than keeping a single unverified calendar. Save receipts and acknowledgements alongside your application number and scorecard.
Use the tracker to compare options on more than a headline cutoff. Read the programme curriculum and published fee schedule. If comparing placements, use the same programme and cohort where possible, keep median and average separate, and note whether salary is presented as annual compensation or CTC. A missing published figure should remain missing until the institution provides it.
After CMAT-2026
NTA declared CMAT-2026 scores on 17 February 2026. That result date does not establish the application schedule of any college. NTA’s portal lists 2026 as the completed cycle and had no 2027 schedule as of 27 October 2026. No NTA counselling dates for a future cycle should be inferred. Check the chosen college or designated state authority directly and use its current notice for application and seat decisions.
