CMAT cutoffs: no single NTA admission threshold
CMAT has no one cutoff that guarantees admission across participating institutions. NTA conducts the exam and declares scores; its information bulletin says it does not conduct counselling. Candidates apply separately to institutions, which set their own CMAT score cutoffs and selection processes. A cutoff may determine whether an application is considered for shortlisting, but it does not establish a final offer or seat by itself.
As of 27 October 2026, NTA’s portal shows CMAT-2026 as the latest published cycle and has no CMAT-2027 bulletin. Do not treat an older cutoff table as a future target. Confirm the score year and programme on each institution’s own admissions page. A cutoff can differ by campus, degree, category, round and year, and published criteria can change.
What a cutoff may mean
“Cutoff” is used for several different decisions. An institution may publish a minimum score to submit an application, a threshold for shortlisting, or a past closing score from a completed round. These figures are not interchangeable. A minimum application threshold can be lower than a competitive shortlist level. A past closing score describes a prior process and does not promise the same outcome in another year.
Check whether the institution reports raw marks, NTA score, percentile or an internal composite. NTA defines percentile as the share of candidates with a score equal to or below a candidate; percentile is not the percentage of marks earned. Do not compare a cutoff expressed as raw marks with one expressed as percentile. If an institution combines CMAT with academics, interview or work experience, an exam-only threshold may represent only one part of selection.
Build a valid comparison
Before comparing two cutoff values, align details: same programme type, campus, admission year, category or quota, round and score metric. Check that one figure is not an expected cutoff while the other is an official closing score. If an institution publishes a cutoff PDF, open it and verify its date and scope. Keep the source link with your notes. If a source omits the category or programme, do not fill that gap by inference.
An application tracker can use these columns: programme and campus; CMAT score year accepted; published application threshold; published shortlist threshold; selection components; category or quota; source date; application deadline; and application status. Add a note when a value is not published. A blank field is useful because it prompts a direct question to admissions.
Interpret your score without overpromising
Use your score to organize a range of options, not to make a guaranteed-admission claim. Add programmes that are realistic under their current published rules, but also confirm cost, location, curriculum, outcomes and application requirements. A high percentile does not replace a separate application or guarantee an interview; a lower percentile does not establish that every option is closed. Institutions may consider other factors, and their criteria differ.
Where an institution publishes its full selection formula, calculate only what the method supports and preserve its weights and conditions. Do not apply a composite formula from one year to another without checking that it remains valid. If a college lists only a CMAT requirement and later selection rounds, explain that the cutoff is a threshold within its process, not the final result.
2026 score context
NTA reported 53,453 registrants and 41,872 candidates who appeared in CMAT-2026. That is context for the exam cohort, but it cannot be used to derive a college cutoff. Each college’s application pool and programme capacity are different, and NTA does not publish a national list of admission cutoffs. Do not divide a seat estimate by all test-takers and present the result as an admission probability.
What to verify before applying
On each programme’s official page, confirm that it accepts CMAT for the admission year you need, the score type and year required, application and shortlist deadlines, any stated cutoff, interview or written-test requirements, and required documents. Ask admissions whether a published threshold is a minimum to apply or a recent shortlist level. Keep a record of the response and date checked.
No CMAT-2027 cutoff exists in an official NTA notice as of the portal check. When institutions publish criteria for the next cycle, use current programme-specific information. NTA’s role ends with the score process; the college or designated state authority is responsible for admission thresholds and seat allocation.
