CMAT-2026 paper structure
The latest detailed pattern available on NTA’s CMAT portal is for CMAT-2026, used for management admissions in academic session 2026-27. Its information bulletin specifies a three-hour computer-based test in English. The paper has five areas, with 20 questions and 80 marks in each: Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation; Logical Reasoning; Language Comprehension; General Awareness; and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. In total, that is 100 questions and 400 marks. These are the published 2026 figures, not a promise that NTA will retain the same structure for a later exam. CMAT-2026 bulletin
Equal question counts make the paper’s broad distribution unusually clear: each section represents one-fifth of the 100 questions and one-fifth of the 400 maximum marks. Within the two combined labels, however, NTA gives one count for Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation together, not a separate quota for quantitative questions versus data interpretation. The same principle applies to the other section labels: 20 questions is the section total, not a chapter-level allocation.
The current CMAT portal describes CMAT-2026 as the test for the 2026-27 management admission session and identifies the same five capability areas. Applicants should use the bulletin and notices for that edition when interpreting old scorecards or practice tests. NTA CMAT portal
What each section covers
The official section map is useful for checking whether a mock omits a whole part of the paper. Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation combines quantitative problem solving with data interpretation. Logical Reasoning is a separate section. Language Comprehension tests a different skill set from numerical work, and General Awareness is distinct from Innovation & Entrepreneurship. The bulletin assigns each of these five sections the same 20-question, 80-mark weight, but it does not provide guaranteed chapter-by-chapter question counts. Do not read a coaching topic list or a past paper’s distribution as a fixed NTA quota for a future attempt.
The Innovation & Entrepreneurship section is a full fifth section in the 2026 pattern, not an optional add-on. A preparation plan that focuses only on the four more familiar quantitative, reasoning, language and awareness sections would leave one-fifth of the official 2026 question count out of its coverage. For balanced practice, track accuracy and time separately across all five labelled areas. That is a planning implication of equal section counts, not a claim that each area will have equal difficulty.
NTA says the 2026 question paper was in English only. The format is computer based, so candidates should use the official test instructions and any practice interface to understand how responses are selected and reviewed. This page does not infer interface controls or accessibility arrangements beyond what NTA’s bulletin specifies.
CMAT-2026 marking scheme
The CMAT-2026 bulletin awards four marks for a correct answer, deducts one mark for an incorrect answer, and gives no marks for an unattempted question. With 100 questions at four marks each, the maximum raw score is 400. An incorrect response therefore reduces the score by one mark rather than by four; the deduction is relative to an unanswered item, while a correct answer adds four. These calculations describe the published rule and do not predict percentiles, cutoffs or admission outcomes. CMAT-2026 information bulletin
The bulletin’s unattempted-answer rule is zero marks. It does not state that leaving a question blank creates an additional penalty. A candidate comparing an uncertain attempt with a blank response can use the scoring rule directly: if the chance of a correct answer is p and there is no other cost, the expected raw score is 4p − (1 − p), which is positive above 20 per cent. This is a mathematical consequence of the 2026 +4/−1/0 scheme, not personal exam advice. Time spent on an uncertain question and the reliability of a candidate’s probability estimate are outside that calculation.
The paper is divided evenly by section in the published pattern, but the bulletin does not give a separate marking rule by subject. Apply the stated +4/−1/0 rule to the 2026 paper as published, and recheck the next bulletin rather than assuming that its marking system remains unchanged.
Edition and update boundary
As checked on 27 October 2026, NTA’s CMAT portal showed the CMAT-2026 notices and scorecard, and its current CMAT introduction still described the five sections for the 2026-27 session. The portal had not published a CMAT-2027 bulletin at that check. Accordingly, this page records the last detailed official edition available, CMAT-2026; it does not label the 2026 structure, scoring, language or duration as confirmed rules for a future attempt. Current CMAT introduction
When NTA releases a new bulletin, compare its section names, section counts, time, language and marking scheme with this 2026 reference. Confirm whether each section remains equally weighted, whether wrong and unanswered responses are treated the same way, and whether CBT instructions have changed. Use the candidate’s own cycle bulletin and admit-card instructions for operational decisions. Until that announcement, a 2026 mock is useful for understanding the previous paper structure, but should be labelled as CMAT-2026 practice rather than a verified CMAT-2027 simulation.
