XAT 2027 is scheduled for Pending verification, 2 pm-5 pm. The official XAT pages reviewed on 27 October 2026 have not yet established the 2027 question distribution or marking scheme. Build your plan around the official 2026 structure as a recent reference, then adjust when XLRI publishes the 2027 instructions. Do not treat a previous year’s section counts or penalty rules as guaranteed for the next paper.
Start with the published format, while keeping its year attached
The official XAT 2026 instructions described a 95-question computer-based test in English. Part 1 ran for 170 minutes and covered Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation. Part 2 contained General Knowledge and lasted 10 minutes. The 2026 paper had 26 VA-LR questions, 21 Decision Making questions, 28 QA-DI questions and 20 GK questions. The official overview explains that VA-LR could include reading comprehension, poems, cartoons, vocabulary, grammar and reasoning; Decision Making used personal or professional scenarios; and QA-DI involved quantitative foundations and data interpretation.
This is a baseline for practice, not a 2027 guarantee. When the next official instructions appear, compare the sections, timing, question types and scoring before changing your mock strategy. XAT’s official site also links previous question papers, including papers from 2018 through 2024. Use those papers as practice material, checking the year and version so you know which format you are solving.
Build a practice loop around decisions, not hours logged
Set a weekly rhythm with three types of work: learn or revise concepts, solve timed sets, and review errors. A study session is useful when it changes what you can do on a fresh question. Track the topic, reason for the error, time spent and next action. Common categories include a concept gap, a misread condition, a calculation slip, an unsupported assumption or an inefficient question choice. Revisit the same concept with a new question rather than memorising the answer to one old item.
For VA-LR, practise reading for argument, structure and evidence. After a passage, write its central claim in one sentence and identify what supports it. For inference questions, separate what the passage states from what seems plausible from outside knowledge. Rotate among passages and shorter verbal exercises because the official 2026 overview lists several forms of verbal and reasoning questions, not only long reading passages.
For Decision Making, make the trade-off explicit. Identify the parties affected, the constraints in the case, the relevant facts, and the options that respect those constraints. Then compare the likely consequences. Avoid choosing an option because it sounds generous or decisive if it ignores the stated facts. The official overview describes this section as scenario-based and expects critical thinking, problem-solving and prioritisation. Practising the reasoning process helps transfer better than memorising a supposed answer pattern.
For QA-DI, rotate topic revision with mixed sets. The 2026 overview names arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern mathematics as areas of quantitative foundations; data interpretation asks candidates to interpret, summarise and analyse information. Review calculations with the goal of spotting which operation or representation is needed. In DI, write down the units and denominator before comparing values. In QA, estimate before committing to long calculations and check whether answer options permit a quicker verification.
Use mocks to make time decisions visible
Take a full-length mock under conditions that resemble the published format, then review it more carefully than you took it. Under the 2026 arrangement, Part 1 was time-bound for 170 minutes across three areas, while GK was in a separate 10-minute part. That structure makes it useful to practise how you move between Part 1 sections, but the exact 2027 timing must be checked when official instructions arrive.
During review, mark each question as attempted correctly, attempted incorrectly, left for a reason, or left because time ran out. Compare accuracy and time by topic and question type. Ask whether a wrong answer came from knowledge, reading, calculation, judgement or pacing. Also note questions you answered correctly but with low confidence; they can reveal a weak method hidden by a lucky result. Do not use a mock score as a predicted percentile or admission outcome unless the provider supplies a transparent, relevant comparison method.
The 2026 instructions awarded one mark for a correct answer, deducted 0.25 for an incorrect answer and applied a 0.10 penalty to unanswered questions beyond eight; they said GK had no negative marking. These details can affect review of 2026 papers. Do not carry that exact penalty model into 2027 until the official 2027 instructions confirm it. Practise both the skill and the decision rule: when to answer, when to skip and how to protect time for questions you can solve.
A practical weekly structure
If you have several months, use an early phase to identify weak concepts, a middle phase for mixed timed practice and a later phase for full mocks and targeted repair. If you have less time, keep the same sequence in shorter blocks rather than trying to cover every topic superficially. Leave time for sleep and recovery; fatigue can make reading and arithmetic errors harder to detect.
One sample week could include two concept-and-practice sessions, one Decision Making case set, one verbal reading session, one QA-DI mixed set, one mock or timed section, and a dedicated error-review block. Adjust the balance based on actual performance, not on a generic timetable. If a topic is consistently accurate and efficient, spend less revision time there. If a topic produces repeated errors, identify the subskill behind them and return to practice with fresh items.
Prepare for application and exam-day details too
Keep preparation separate from application administration. The official XAT 2027 timeline lists registration through Pending verification and an examination on Pending verification. The site lists Pending verification for admit-card download as tentative. Check the official portal for the current notice, and use the eventual admit card for your centre, reporting time and permitted-items instructions. The 2026 bulletin’s fee and document requirements are historical and should not be assumed to be 2027 rules.
As of 27 October 2026, official XAT pages did not establish the 2027 pattern or marking scheme. Continue using official past papers and the 2026 format as dated practice references, but leave room to update your plan when the next official instructions are issued. A useful preparation system tracks evidence of progress: new questions solved, errors understood, time decisions improved and concepts that still need work.
