The official XAT material currently available for detailed syllabus and paper structure is for XAT 2026, not XAT 2027. It describes four sections: Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA & LR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI), and General Knowledge (GK). Its figures and section timing should be read as the 2026 pattern only. As of 27 October 2026, the reviewed official 2027 home, registration and FAQ pages publish the exam schedule and selected test information but do not provide a 2027 syllabus or a confirmed 2027 question-by-question structure.
What the 2026 official overview covers
The XAT 2026 overview places VA & LR, DM and QA & DI in Part 1, allotted 170 minutes, and GK in Part 2, allotted 10 minutes. It gives approximate question counts of 26, 21, 28 and 20 respectively. The separate 2026 instructions state 95 questions in total, with 26 VA & LR, 21 DM, 28 QA & DI and 20 GK. Counts and format may change by cycle, so use these numbers to understand the historical paper and practise against official 2026 material, not as a guaranteed 2027 blueprint.
The official overview describes the skill areas more usefully than a generic topic checklist. VA & LR includes critical and analytical reasoning, reading comprehension (including poems, cartoons and passages), vocabulary, English grammar, para jumbles and cloze tests. DM uses personal and professional scenarios and asks candidates to apply critical thinking, problem-solving and prioritisation. QA & DI draws on foundational arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern mathematics, along with interpreting, summarising and analysing data. GK is described as a mix of static general knowledge and current affairs.
Prepare by skill, not only by a topic list
For VA & LR, practise close reading and reasoning from what a passage actually says. The official scope includes varied reading forms as well as grammar and vocabulary exercises; preparation limited to one passage style would leave out named question types. For DM, work through cases by identifying the stakeholders, constraints and consequences before selecting an option. This mirrors the official description of scenario-based judgement and prioritisation without assuming that one memorised formula resolves every case.
In QA & DI, build comfort with the named foundational areas and with extracting meaning from tables, charts or other presented data. The official document describes interpretation, summarisation and analysis as central to DI. Practise explaining what a data set supports before doing calculations, because a correct arithmetic operation can still answer the wrong question. GK is divided in the official 2026 overview into static knowledge and current affairs; the document gives eight and twelve questions respectively. That split is specific to 2026 and should not be treated as a guaranteed count for 2027.
Timing and marking in the historical pattern
The 2026 instructions place 170 minutes in Part 1 and 10 minutes in Part 2, with each part controlled by its own timer. For 2026, the official instructions award one mark for a correct answer and deduct 0.25 for an incorrect answer; they also deduct 0.10 for each unattempted question after eight unattempted questions. The same document says there is no negative marking for GK. The overview states that GK scores are used exclusively by XLRI for its final selection process. These are cycle-labelled 2026 facts. Until a 2027 instruction document confirms the same scheme, candidates should not use them as binding 2027 scoring rules.
The 2026 instructions also say candidates can move between sections and questions in Part 1, and that Part 1 locks when its timer ends before Part 2 begins. This can shape practice strategy for the 2026 format, but it does not establish that the 2027 interface will be identical. Follow the on-screen instructions during the actual examination.
How to use official material responsibly
Download the official XAT 2026 overview for its topic descriptions and the XAT 2026 important instructions for its detailed paper structure and marking. Treat both as historical practice references. The XAT 2027 date is currently listed as 3 January 2027, 2 pm to 5 pm on the official XAT website, but a published exam date does not itself confirm syllabus, count, timing split or marking scheme.
When XLRI publishes current-cycle test instructions, use that document to replace the historical pattern assumptions. Until then, a sensible preparation approach is to cover the four previously published sections while keeping a note that the exact 2027 distribution remains unconfirmed in the official sources checked for this article. This distinction lets candidates use available material without mistaking last year’s paper design for a promise about the next one.
