Exam Date
The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national management entrance examination conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur. XAT scores are used by XLRI and a large set of other management institutes, but the score is only one part of an application. Every participating institute sets its own programme choices, shortlist rules, selection stages, eligibility checks and deadlines. Registering for XAT does not automatically submit a separate application to each institute.
The 2027 examination is scheduled for Pending verification, from 2 pm to 5 pm. The official timeline lists registration from 15 July through Pending verification. The site gives 20 December 2026 as the admit-card download date, marked tentative. These are official 2027-cycle dates shown on XAT’s site when checked on 27 October 2026. XAT has not published the final 2027 admit-card instructions in the sources reviewed here.
This distinction matters for the exam pattern too. The available official overview and instructions reviewed for this article describe XAT 2026. They are useful for understanding the recent format, but they do not prove that the 2027 paper will be identical. No 2027 pattern bulletin was available on 27 October 2026. Use the next official bulletin or instructions if XLRI publishes changes.
The official XAT 2026 instructions described a computer-based paper in English with 95 multiple-choice questions. Part 1 lasted 170 minutes and contained Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (26 questions), Decision Making (21) and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (28). Part 2 lasted 10 minutes and contained 20 General Knowledge questions. The 2026 overview described the same approximate section counts and explained that verbal questions could include reading comprehension, poems, cartoons, vocabulary, grammar and reasoning; Decision Making used scenarios; and QA-DI tested quantitative foundations and data interpretation.
Under the 2026 instructions, a correct answer earned one mark and an incorrect answer lost 0.25 marks. A penalty of 0.10 marks applied to each unattempted question after the first eight. The instructions said General Knowledge questions did not carry negative marking. These are dated 2026 rules. Do not assume they carry forward unchanged to XAT 2027; verify the next official question-paper instructions before finalising attempt strategy.
For preparation, the practical implication of the 2026 arrangement is that time allocation differs across sections. Part 1 is time-bound as a whole; the instructions do not describe a separate section timer for each of its three sections. A candidate therefore needs to decide how to move between verbal, Decision Making and QA-DI while protecting enough time to attempt questions they can solve accurately. General Knowledge is in a separate short part. Historical section counts are a guide to practice balance, not a guarantee of 2027 question distribution.
XAT eligibility should be read at two levels: eligibility to sit the exam, and eligibility for the programme or institute a candidate wants. XAT’s application cycle and XLRI’s admissions process are related, but a valid XAT registration or score does not by itself establish that a candidate satisfies every programme condition. The relevant 2027 programme prospectus and current admission page must be checked for degree, completion status, academic records and any programme-specific requirements. The 2026 materials reviewed here do not settle the full set of 2027 programme criteria, so this overview does not invent an age limit, minimum percentage or work-experience rule.
Candidates applying beyond XLRI should also read each institute’s own instructions. The XAT 2026 bulletin states that associate institutes make their own decisions about selection and the weight given to different test components; it directs candidates to follow the institution’s separate application procedure. That is why the XAT application should be treated as the examination registration, not as a universal B-school application form. Track separate application opens and closes, programme preferences, required documents and interview or assessment stages for every institute on your shortlist.
For XAT 2027, the official schedule lists registration opening on 15 July 2026 and closing on 6 December 2026. The application is online through the official XAT portal. The XAT 2026 bulletin describes the earlier process: create a login, verify contact details, fill personal and academic information, choose test-city preferences, upload a photograph and signature, review the form, pay, and save the confirmation. That sequence is historical guidance; follow the live 2027 form for current fields and upload specifications.
The 2026 bulletin listed an XAT registration fee of ₹2,200 and an additional ₹200 for each XLRI programme. Those amounts belong to XAT 2026 and should not be presented as 2027 fees. The current 2027 fee should be read from the live application before payment. Keep the payment receipt and application confirmation, and make sure the email address and mobile number remain accessible. XAT’s current application site cautions candidates that the email ID and mobile number cannot be changed after registration, so check both carefully before submitting.
The 2027 site announced a final official mock-test opportunity on 31 October and 1 November 2026 and said a candidate must register by 28 October to be eligible for that mock. This is a separate mock eligibility condition, not the final examination registration deadline. On 27 October, the mock registration cutoff was imminent; candidates should check the live official notice immediately rather than rely on an old article or assume that registering later will grant access to that mock.
XLRI’s official site says XAT scores are accepted by more than 250 institutes. This is a count reported by the exam authority, not a promise that every listed institute offers the same programme quality, admission method, recognition, fee structure or outcomes. The official 2026 bulletin includes XAMI members and associate institutes and explicitly says XLRI does not verify the quality of programmes offered by other institutions using XAT scores. Candidates should confirm the programme’s current status, campus, degree or diploma awarded, total cost, selection process and placement reporting directly with the institution and relevant regulator where applicable.
A useful shortlist separates three questions. First, does the institute accept XAT for the exact programme and intake year? Second, does the candidate need to submit a separate application or choose the programme within the XAT form? Third, what selection stages and evidence does the institute use after the test? Do not infer a shortlist threshold from another college’s result, or treat a previous-year cutoff as a guaranteed offer line. The institute’s selection may include additional stages, and the rules can change by programme and cycle.
When comparing score information, keep score, percentile and cutoff in their proper roles. A score is the candidate’s marks under the exam’s scoring rules; a percentile describes relative position in a candidate pool; and an institute’s cutoff is a selection filter set for a particular process. A cutoff from one programme, category, campus or year cannot be transferred automatically to another. The official material reviewed for this overview does not establish a universal XAT 2027 cutoff or a single score that guarantees admission. Treat third-party predictions as estimates unless a college publishes an official shortlist rule.
Candidates should also distinguish the exam’s General Knowledge section from the components an institute may use in shortlisting. XAT’s 2026 test instructions establish the paper and marking rules, while the 2026 bulletin says institutes decide their own selection process and component weightages. Therefore, do not assume that an exam section’s marks receive the same weight at every institution. Read the institute’s published selection policy for the exact programme and intake, and check whether it uses an overall score, sectional scores, academic record, work experience, an interview, a written task or another assessment.
The XAT 2027 application period begins in 2026, while the examination takes place in January 2027. That cross-calendar-year structure can cause mistakes when candidates compare dates or name files. Record each deadline with its full month, day and year, and identify which process it belongs to: the main XAT registration, an XLRI programme choice, a separate institute form, the mock test, or a later admission stage. The mock-test deadline announced for 28 October is earlier than the main registration close in December, so it should not be treated as the end of all XAT applications.
Keep a simple application tracker with one row per programme rather than one row per institution. A school can have more than one programme, each with a different application path or selection policy. Record the official programme name, intake year, source page, application ID, fee paid, test score requirement, separate form status, shortlist stages and last date to respond to an offer. This prevents a common process error: assuming the XAT form has transmitted an application to every institute named on an acceptance list.
For candidates comparing XAT with other management tests, first check whether the target programmes actually accept the alternative examination and whether they require separate test-specific forms. Then compare the dates that matter to the candidate: registration deadlines, test dates, score-release schedules and institute application windows. Avoid choosing an exam only because one published estimate says it has a lower cutoff. That estimate may use a different year, programme or applicant group and may not reflect the institute’s complete selection process.
At the research date, the official XAT site provides a 2027 exam date and registration timeline, but the exam instructions reviewed here are explicitly titled for 2026. The 2026 test pattern, penalty rules and registration fee are therefore reference facts, not confirmed 2027 terms. The admit-card date remains tentative. The sources reviewed do not establish a result date, 2027 cutoff, a universal counselling sequence or a final 2027 list of participating programmes. These items should be refreshed from XLRI, XAT and each institution as their notices appear.
This page is designed to separate what a candidate can act on now from what still needs a current notice. The official registration deadline and examination schedule can guide immediate planning. Historical pattern and fee details can help a candidate understand the recent process, but must be rechecked before relying on them. Institute-level admission requirements always need their own source because the exam authority does not set every participating school’s admissions policy.
For XLRI, use the current XLRI admissions site and the official XAT portal for programme-specific notices. For other institutes, use their own admissions pages. An institute appearing in an older XAT bulletin is evidence of a past association, not proof that its programme is accepting XAT applications in 2027.
Before applying, verify the 2027 exam schedule and live application deadline; read the current fee and payment instructions; use a personal email address and active phone number; check the current photograph and signature specifications; and save the submitted form and payment receipt. Then build a second calendar for the institutes and programmes you actually plan to apply to. Confirm each institute’s 2027 eligibility rules, separate application deadline, selection stages and fee obligations from its official notice.
Use the 2026 paper pattern and marking rules as a dated baseline only. Once XAT publishes the next pattern instructions, compare them with the 2026 structure and update practice accordingly. On exam day, follow the admit card and final instructions for reporting time, permitted items, test-centre address and identity documents. The current home page lists the admit-card date as tentative; the issued admit card and later official notice should control.
As of 27 October 2026, XAT 2027 is an announced cycle with a scheduled exam date and registration deadline. The official sources reviewed do not yet establish a final 2027 admit-card instruction set, 2027 marking scheme, final section counts, result date, institute-specific cutoff or universal counselling process. Those details should be added only when the responsible authority publishes them.
