MAT is an entrance test for MBA and allied postgraduate management programmes. AIMA conducts it, but the exam does not allocate seats or determine admission by itself. The practical decision is whether a MAT score is accepted by the specific programme you want, whether its remaining application window matches your test date, and whether your profile meets that institution’s separate rules. For the current December 2026 administration, AIMA lists Paper Based Test (PBT) and Computer Based Test (CBT), with a combined option. The December notice gives separate registration deadlines and test dates for each mode; it does not announce a 2027 administration schedule. Check the live AIMA portal before paying because dates, cities and participating institutes can be revised.
AIMA describes MAT as a standardised assessment used by business schools to screen candidates for MBA and allied programmes. Its official information page says the Ministry of Education approved MAT as a national-level test in 2003. AIMA’s current material refers to more than 600 business schools, but that headline is not an assurance that every listed institute accepts every administration, programme or score. AIMA itself advises applicants to reconfirm acceptance with the institution because a school’s participation notice does not ensure that its score will be accepted for full-time MBA admission. The test is one part of an admission decision, alongside each school’s own criteria.
That distinction matters when choosing an exam date. MAT registration is not an application to a business school. A candidate must identify the exact programme and campus, check the school’s current admission notice, submit that school’s application separately, and confirm that it accepts the December administration. AIMA’s list of participating management institutes changes between tests, and AIMA says admission criteria differ by institution. A school may set its own qualifying score, graduation marks, selection stages and programme fee. Do not infer an institute’s admission cutoff or eligibility from the MAT registration form.
The current score interpretation guidance makes a similar point about the score itself: it is intended to inform postgraduate admission decisions and should, where possible, be considered with other information. AIMA’s score guide says MAT scores should not be compared directly with scores on other tests. It describes normalization and scaling to account for differences between MAT administrations. A percentile is a rank-position measure within the relevant MAT testing population, not the probability of admission to a particular college. For decisions, read the institute’s own current selection notice rather than converting a MAT percentile into a promised outcome.
For December 2026, AIMA’s candidate information says graduates in any discipline may apply and final-year students of graduate courses may also apply. AIMA’s general FAQ adds that the final-year candidate appears provisionally and notes that the minimum graduation percentage can vary by management institute or university. It directs candidates to the chosen institution’s prospectus for that requirement. Therefore, meeting MAT’s exam eligibility does not establish eligibility for a particular MBA or PGDM programme. Check both sets of rules before applying: AIMA’s test conditions for the current administration and the school’s own degree, marks, work-experience or document requirements.
AIMA’s FAQ says there is no age bar and work experience is not necessary to appear for MAT. These are test-entry statements, not a promise that every school waives age, experience or other programme conditions. The current candidate page does not provide a universal MAT reservation rule or a single graduation percentage threshold for all participating institutions. Candidates should not assume that a test-level rule settles programme-level reservation, category documentation or selection criteria. Verify those items with the school and the relevant admission notice.
The available official December notice is the responsible source for the active administration. Older pages and archived bulletins can describe prior cycles, but they cannot establish the December 2026 deadlines, fee or pattern if AIMA’s current notice has changed. At the time checked, AIMA’s current page identifies December 2026 and the live portal presents that cycle. AIMA has not announced a December notice for 2027 in the sources checked here; do not treat the calendar year of a future MBA intake as proof of a particular MAT date or eligibility rule.
AIMA lists three registration choices: PBT, CBT, or PBT+CBT. For December 2026, the current candidate page lists ₹2,300 for either single mode and ₹4,000 for both modes. AIMA’s page explains the combined option as the ₹2,300 base fee plus ₹1,700 for the additional mode. It also says candidates choosing both may select seven management institutes for score sending, compared with five for one mode. These fees cover the MAT registration option described by AIMA; they are not school application fees, tuition or a deposit for admission.
Choose the mode around the actual city and date available, your familiarity with the format and your school application deadlines. PBT means answering on paper using the answer sheet at a test centre. CBT presents questions on a computer and records answers through the interface. AIMA’s FAQ describes both modes and the need for basic keyboard and mouse familiarity for CBT. The current December page gives a scheduled test date for each. It does not list a remote-proctored home test as a current December mode, so old references to an internet-based test should not be used to plan this administration.
The two-mode option can provide another attempt within the same December administration and gives two additional score-send selections under AIMA’s stated rule. That may be useful if a candidate wants another opportunity, but it costs ₹1,700 more than one mode and requires checking that both dates are workable. The AIMA notice states that the best score is used for MBA/PGDM admissions; its score interpretation page explains the scale, but candidates should still verify how a particular institution treats multiple attempts and which administration it accepts. Do not buy the combined mode on the assumption that it guarantees a better score or admission.
The December 2026 calendar is mode-specific. PBT registration closes on 14 December 2026, its admit card becomes available from 5 pm on 17 December, and the test is scheduled for 20 December. CBT registration closes on 21 December, its admit card becomes available from 5 pm on 24 December, and the test is scheduled for 27 December. AIMA says the December result is expected by the first week of January 2027. This result window is an estimate stated by the exam authority, not a fixed result date. The two registration deadlines are not interchangeable: a candidate who wants PBT should use the earlier PBT deadline even though CBT registration remains open later.
Register through the official MAT portal, mat.aima.in. AIMA’s current information page says online payment supports credit or debit card, net banking, UPI and Paytm wallet. It asks candidates to have a valid email address, a scanned photograph of 10–50 KB, a scanned signature of 5–20 KB and payment details ready. Follow the current portal’s upload instructions for accepted file formats and any additional fields, since the page’s checklist is not a substitute for the live form. Save the submitted application details and payment confirmation, then check the applicant dashboard for status and future instructions.
Before submitting, verify the selected test mode, test city preferences, spelling of personal details and the email address used for the account. Read the current declaration and refund policy on the portal. AIMA’s page does not promise that a submitted form can be freely edited or that a fee is refundable; do not assume either. If a correction window is announced, use only the dates and fields stated in that official notice. Keep enough time between registration and the relevant deadline to resolve a payment or upload problem.
AIMA publishes the test-city list separately and indicates that city availability depends on the mode. Candidates should confirm that their preferred city appears for the selected test and understand the portal’s allocation process before final submission. The admit card is the authoritative source for the assigned venue, reporting details and test time. AIMA’s candidate notice says the admit card includes the candidate’s name, form number, roll number, test date, time and venue address, and instructs candidates to follow the date and time allotted. Do not rely on a saved preference as proof of the final centre.
The current December 2026 pattern has five sections with 30 questions each, for 150 questions in 120 minutes. The sections are Language Comprehension; Intelligence and Critical Reasoning; Mathematical Skills; Data Analysis and Sufficiency; and Economic and Business Environment. AIMA specifies a penalty of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. It says the overall score is based on all five sections. Dividing 120 minutes by 150 questions gives an average of 48 seconds per question; this is a planning calculation, not an official section timing or question-level limit. The candidate should practise moving between accuracy and pace rather than assume that each section receives a separate fixed time allocation.
Because each section contains 30 questions, the paper is evenly divided by question count. That does not mean each section is equally easy or that a candidate should spend exactly 24 minutes on each. AIMA’s current information does not publish a section-wise time limit. The negative marking means a blind guess has a cost; a candidate should learn to distinguish a reasoned elimination from a completely unsupported choice. The practical balance between attempting and leaving a question depends on the candidate’s accuracy and the exact scoring instructions in the current test interface.
AIMA’s score interpretation guide says the score report contains five section scores and a composite score. The five section scales range from 0 to 100, while the composite score ranges from 200 to 800; the composite uses all five sections with equal weightage. The report also includes percentile-below figures for each score. AIMA notes that those percentiles may change marginally across administrations for the same scores. Its guidance explains that normalization and scaling adjust for small difficulty differences between test administrations. Read the scorecard’s section and composite measures together, and use the percentile for its intended rank context. Do not compare MAT composite scores directly with CAT, CMAT or another test’s scores; AIMA explicitly says MAT is not intended to be parallel to other tests.
Preparation should follow the five named sections and the current 120-minute format. Build a diagnostic set across all five areas, record time and accuracy separately, and use errors to decide what to practise next. For Language Comprehension, track whether misses arise from misunderstanding, vocabulary or rushing. In Mathematical Skills and Data Analysis and Sufficiency, review the setup of each problem as well as the arithmetic. For Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, identify the rule or relationship that supports the answer. For Economic and Business Environment, use recent, reliable reading and check facts rather than memorising unsourced lists. These are study methods inferred from the published section labels and penalty; AIMA does not publish a required number of study hours or a guaranteed preparation formula in the current candidate notice.
The December timetable leaves different preparation windows depending on the selected mode. A candidate taking PBT sits seven days after its registration deadline; CBT is six days after its deadline. These intervals are calculated from AIMA’s listed dates and show why test preparation should begin before the form closes. They are not extra registration periods. If considering both modes, place both dates on a calendar alongside school application and interview schedules, then decide whether the extra fee and second test fit your plan.
A MAT score can support applications only where the school and programme accept it for the relevant admission cycle. AIMA’s current December page asks candidates to select institutions where they have applied or are applying. It cautions that score acceptance by a listed participating institute can differ in practice and tells candidates to recheck with the institute or university. Before selecting score recipients, confirm the programme name, campus, admission year, accepted MAT administrations, score submission method and any separate application deadline directly on the school’s official site. AIMA’s directory is a discovery tool; the school’s current notification controls the application requirements.
After the test, AIMA says candidates can download the score from the MAT website’s applicant dashboard. The December result is expected by the first week of January 2027. The official FAQ states that a MAT score is valid for one year. Because a school may set its own rules on acceptable test administrations and score age, confirm that validity window against the programme’s current admission notice before relying on an earlier score. Keep the scorecard and account credentials accessible while completing applications.
AIMA’s score guide describes the composite as an equal-weight combination across five sections and recommends interpreting the score in combination with other information. It does not set one universal admission cutoff for all schools. There is therefore no responsible basis to quote a single MAT percentile as a guaranteed target for admission. If a school publishes a qualifying threshold, check the exact programme, campus, category and cycle to which it applies, then review what follows that threshold. A qualifying score can be only an initial screen; it should not be read as a final offer or a seat allocation.
MAT does not run a common central counselling process in the December notice. AIMA directs candidates to the individual management institutes for programme details and approval or recognition checks. Once applications are submitted, follow each institution’s own selection process, which may include additional criteria or stages. Verify current programme approval and recognition with the responsible authority or institution, as AIMA advises. Also compare total programme cost, location, curriculum and placement disclosures using the school’s own current documents; MAT participation alone does not establish those qualities.
AIMA’s active December 2026 pages are the current authority for the dates, fees and paper structure described here. They do not establish a 2027 test calendar, future fee, future pattern or future school acceptance list. Recheck the official MAT portal and the target school’s admission page before acting on any later cycle.
